Do you think we’ve changed much over the years? Our building may be familiar here today on the High Street, but almost 100 years ago, it was home to A. Macintyre & Sons, a Ford service station right here on the corner of Monzie.
Back in the day, Fort William was buzzing with change at the turn of the century, as cars were making their way onto the highland roads, and businesses like Macintyre’s were at the forefront of this transformation. Tourism began to take root during the 19th century, especially with the increasing popularity of mountaineering and walking holidays. The imposing presence of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain, attracted adventurers and climbers to the area. As travel became easier, more visitors from Britain and beyond began to explore the Highlands.
This photo is part of a fascinating collection published by The Granite House, featuring rare images of Fort William from circa 1890 onwards. The book offers a unique look at the people, places, and stories that shaped our town—complete with stunning street scenes, early mountaineers heading for Ben Nevis, and glimpses of the West Highland Railway.
Whether you're a longtime resident or just passing through, this collection offers a captivating glimpse into Fort William’s vibrant history. Stop by to explore the past in person, or pick up your own copy of the book to take the journey home with you! 📚
