The Unknown Dead : Berry Head Hotel 1745

On a stormy night in 1745 just off Berry Head / Brixham the wooden transport ship Tiger - commissioned by the British Government to ferry weapons and supplies from the French coast to help with the Battle in the North during the Jacobite Rebellion..smashed into the lethal rocks of Berry Head and sank with all hands lost…the dead over the coming days appearing on Brixhams shores..up to twenty souls lost some not recovered and buried in the tradition of wreck internments near the site of the disaster on shore…

“buried in a mound in a 'quiet hollow' off a 'small cove just east of Shorestone'.

With a plaque reading “Unknown Dead” the graves were quietly forgotten and fifty years later another war loomed..the Napoleonic War and Britain needed to up its defenses…two huge forts were built on the Berryhead headland overlaying the Iron Age promentary fort and down below a military hospital was built just east of Shoalstone with a pretty garden and nice views out to sea….the war ended and time passed by..a local successful builder leasing the site until 1823 when it’s most famous inhabitant took residence…Reverend Francis Lyte was a well known clergyman and Antiquarian famous for his writing of the Hymn “Abide with Me” created on the site on his deathbed many years later…yet one summers evening he was tending his garden and bones began to appear..lots of bones…a small graveyard unknown at the time revealed itself to Francis and it was realized these were the Dead from the Tiger…reburied with a plaque reading “Unknown Dead” the graves have sat in quiet reflection for two hundred years…a fascinating location and now a beautiful Hotel overlooking Torbay…thanks for reading. — in Brixham.

The Flagship family pub on Paignton seafront, overlooking Paignton Green, was a family-friendly pub with an indoor children's soft-play area called the Fun House.
It then became the Harvester and more recently the Costero Lounge.

Early morning sunrise visit to Start point ( south of Slapton).
Pictures of Tuna, and a right evil "devIls coach horse beetle" almost scorpion like in its body language. And a few of the local berry head celebrity turtle doves.
Nature is incredible, breathtaking and never fails to take my breath away.

Paignton harbour at low tide.

A Little Gem on the English Riviera! 🌊⚓

Tucked away at the southern end of Paignton seafront, Paignton Harbour is a charming little corner of South Devon, full of traditional seaside character, fishing boats and beautiful coastal scenery. It’s a lovely spot to escape the hustle and bustle, enjoy the fresh sea air and watch the ever-changing moods of the sea. Whether you’re a keen photographer, a visitor exploring the English Riviera or a local enjoying a stroll, the harbour has something special about it.

One of the most fascinating things about Paignton Harbour is its dramatic tidal range, which can be around 3–4 metres on larger spring tides. At high tide, the boats gently float on the water, but as the tide retreats, the harbour transforms, revealing stretches of harbour bed and boats resting on the bottom. Then, as the tide turns, the water slowly returns, bringing the boats afloat once more. It’s a wonderful natural spectacle and a reminder of just how much our coastline changes throughout the day. If you’re visiting Paignton, the harbour is well worth a look — especially if you catch it at both high and low tide! 🌊📸
