on the edge of the forest offering fully equipped self catering accommodation all year round. Surrounded by the beautiful Forest of Dean, Parkend is home to the RSPB Nagshead Reserve and has a fantastic village shop/Post Office with cafe;, two pubs offering excelle

nt food, a cycle hire shop with cafe and is the last station for the Dean Forest Steam Railway It is a peaceful village location where sheep wander freely, deer and wild boar can often be seen and buzzards fly overhead. These self catering cottages have been sympathetically renovated to a high standard by the owners who live in Castlemain Mill on the same site,

Castlerag and Horse Gin cottages are converted from workshops/stables and are among the earliest buildings in Parkend. They are named after old coal mines in the immediate vicinity as the main house was previously the offices of the Parkend Deep Navigation Collieries Ltd. The cottages are surrounded by forest which has an abundance of tracks and trails for walking and cycling, both cottages are self catering and have off road parking and secluded outside sitting areas with views across the surrounding countryside. Secure cycle storage - so bring your bike to explore the many cycle trails around and for the more adventurous why not try the Verderer's or Freeminer trails at Pedalabikeaway in Cannop Cycle Centre which is only a 15 mins warm up ride away. The nearest towns are Lydney and Coleford and the larger towns and cities of Bristol, Cardiff, Cheltenham, Chepstow, Gloucester and Monmouth are all easily accessible for a day out.

Meet the common pipistrelle bat 🦇

The common pipistrelle is our smallest and most common bat, weighing just 3-8g.

Despite its size, the common pipistrelle can eat over 3,000 tiny insects in a single night that they find in the dark by using echolocation.

They roost in tree holes, bat boxes and even the roof spaces of houses, often in small colonies.

During the summer, females form maternity colonies and will have just a single pup each.

They hibernate over winter, usually between November and April, but may come out to feed on warm days.

The Rising Sun at Moseley Green has a much loved live music program throughout the summer. Lots of our guests have enjoyed strolling through the woods to this very popular watering hole.

They need your help to keep the music playing and would be really grateful if you could sign the petition below.
Many thanks

What makes it all worthwhile - Fantastic 5* review from our latest guests.

We had a truly wonderful stay at Elaine’s beautiful property, perfectly located in between the forest and so well maintained. From the moment we arrived, Elaine’s warm hospitality shone through – she welcomed us with her delicious home-baked shortbread and lemon drizzle cake, both absolutely delightful! During the summer, the garden is filled with plums, and Elaine generously invites guests to enjoy them – a sweet treat not to be missed. Elaine and her husband Tony were incredibly kind and shared great suggestions for exploring the Forest of Dean, which made our trip even more memorable. The combination of a peaceful location, immaculate property, and genuinely caring hosts made this stay exceptional. We would highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area – it’s a gem!

Ever wondered what freeminers do?

This very interesting video follows Freeminer Mike Howell through his Wallsend Gale with his son Daniel who is the current Deputy Gaveller. They both lived at Castlemain Mill in Parkend for many years and Mike sadly passed away just after this was filmed.

For centuries, freeminers have held the right to mine coal anywhere within the Forest of Dean. To become a freeminer, one must be over 21, born within the hu...
