It is an ideal location to explore the Yorkshire Dales with Wharfedale to the south and Wensleydale to the North. The bustling little market town of Pateley Bridge is only 6 miles away with its selection of independant stores and galleries. Located on the Nidderdale Way, it is situated in an enviable position to explore the many walking and mountain biking opportunities that Nidderdale has to offer. At the front of the cottages is a pretty patio area with furniture where you can enjoy your morning coffee or dine alfresco in the summer months. There is also shared use of a lawned area with a picnic table where you can listen to the sound of the stream babbling by and soak in the panoramic countryside views.

Lakeview is a cosy, dog-friendly cottage overlooking Gouthwaite Reservoir, just five miles from Pateley Bridge. By late September the Dales are beginning to turn autumnal – a lovely time for quieter walks, crisp mornings and evenings in front of the log fire.

The cottage sleeps four in a king and twin bedroom and has an enclosed garden, fabulous views, reliable Wi-Fi and walks straight from the door. Up to three dogs stay completely free, and we even leave treats and towels for them.

You can walk beside Gouthwaite Reservoir, explore Upper Nidderdale or simply enjoy the peace and quiet. Fountains Abbey, Brimham Rocks, Grassington and the rest of the Yorkshire Dales are all within easy reach.

Hidden Gems of Nidderdale – There's so much more to discover...

One of the joys of staying in Nidderdale is finding those special places that many visitors simply drive past.

Take a trip across the moors to Two Stoops, where two ancient stone pillars mark the historic boundary between the old West and North Ridings of Yorkshire, with breathtaking views stretching across the countryside.

Visit Thruscross Reservoir, where an entire village was lost beneath the rising waters in the 1950s. On rare occasions, when the reservoir level is exceptionally low, traces of the old village can still be seen, adding to the mystery of this beautiful spot.

For lovers of history and engineering, Scar House Dam is a must-see. Few people realise that a whole village once stood nearby, built to house the hundreds of workers who constructed the dam. A narrow-gauge railway carried men and materials deep into the valley, helping to create one of Yorkshire's greatest engineering achievements.

Nidderdale is also steeped in folklore, with ancient stone circles, mysterious legends and stories that have been passed down through generations, adding another layer of intrigue to this remarkable landscape.

Step back in time at St Mary's Church, Pateley Bridge

Just a short stroll from Pateley Bridge High Street lies one of Nidderdale's hidden gems – the atmospheric ruins of St Mary's Church. Tucked away amongst mature trees overlooking the town, it's a wonderfully peaceful place to explore and soak up over 700 years of local history.

The first recorded mention of a church here dates back to 1320, although it's thought there may have been an earlier chapel on the site. Over the centuries the church was rebuilt and expanded, with its distinctive tower added in 1691. Sadly, by the early 1800s the building had become too small for the growing congregation and too costly to repair, leading to its closure in 1826.

Today, the ruins and churchyard offer a fascinating glimpse into the past. Wander among the 231 memorials, some dating back to the 17th century, and look out for the remarkable gravestone of Thomas Green, featuring an unusual skull and crossbones carving, as well as the elegant octagonal memorial to Mr Purse.

The church is accessed through a small gate off Old Church Lane, just above the High Street, making it an easy and rewarding detour during a visit to Pateley Bridge. If you're visiting in September, keep an eye out for Heritage Open Days, when the church tower is often opened to the public.

Say Cheese! A Taste of the Yorkshire Dales

Friday 9th to Sunday 18th October 2026 sees the return of the Yorkshire Dales Cheese Festival – a celebration of some of the finest local food, drink and producers that make this area so special.

The Dales has a long tradition of farming and food production, and this festival is the perfect excuse to explore the countryside while discovering the amazing cheeses and artisan produce made right here in Yorkshire.

Expect a delicious mix of cheese tastings, farm visits, food experiences, local producers, special menus and plenty of opportunities to meet the people behind the produce. The festival stretches across the Yorkshire Dales, making it a great way to discover new places while enjoying some very tasty treats!

And of course, no visit to the Dales is complete without enjoying the scenery that helps create these wonderful products. After sampling a few cheeses (or perhaps a few more than a few!), why not walk it off with a stroll through the beautiful Nidderdale countryside?

One of Nidderdale's Hidden Gems... Gouthwaite Reservoir

One of the things our guests love most about staying with us is that you don't have to get in the car to experience some of the finest scenery in the Yorkshire Dales.

Just step outside the cottage door and you're moments away from Gouthwaite Reservoir – a peaceful haven where every season brings something different.
Surrounded by rolling hills, dry stone walls and open countryside, the reservoir is a wonderful place for a gentle stroll or a longer walk through the heart of Nidderdale. Early mornings often bring mirror-like reflections across the water, while evenings can be spectacular as the sun sets over the surrounding fells.

For wildlife lovers, Gouthwaite is a real treat. The reservoir and surrounding area provide an important habitat for a wide variety of birds. Depending on the time of year, you may spot curlews, lapwings, oystercatchers, herons, ducks, geese and many other species, making it a favourite destination for birdwatchers and photographers.

The reservoir also has a fascinating history. Unlike many reservoirs that were built to provide drinking water, Gouthwaite Reservoir was constructed between 1893 and 1901 as a compensation reservoir. Its purpose was to regulate the flow of the River Nidd, ensuring that the many working mills downstream had a reliable supply of water to power their wheels throughout the year. Today, it remains an important part of the valley's landscape while also being a haven for wildlife and a much-loved place for walkers and visitors.

Is there a better way to round off a weekend than with a proper Yorkshire Sunday lunch?

If you're staying with us, these are three of our favourite places to enjoy a delicious roast after a morning exploring the Dales.

🥩 The Sportsman's Arms – Wath-in-Nidderdale
One of our top recommendations. If you fancy earning your Yorkshire pudding, you can even walk there from the cottages in around 45 minutes along the beautiful route beside Gouthwaite Reservoir. Great food, a welcoming atmosphere and the perfect excuse for a leisurely stroll there and back.

🥩 The Crown Hotel, Lofthouse
A traditional Yorkshire village pub serving excellent Sunday lunches in the heart of Upper Nidderdale. It's a lovely drive through some of the area's most spectacular scenery and always worth the trip.

🥩 The Grassington Arms
If you're planning a visit to the pretty market town of Grassington, this is an excellent choice for Sunday lunch. Enjoy a wander around the independent shops before settling in for a hearty roast in one of the Yorkshire Dales' most popular villages.
Whichever you choose, expect generous portions, Yorkshire puddings that mean business and, if you're anything like us, absolutely no room left for dessert... until someone mentions sticky toffee pudding!
