The Green Cleugh, home to the pinnacle heft a wild band of 68 ewes. Hefted to the place they stay here without fencing; always making their way back to the hills of home whenever they are gathered to Eastside for tupping or shearing. They know this place like the back of their hand passing up better grazing to get home. There’s no place like home.

There are 7 hefts on Eastside, each with microhefts within them, we have been learning more about these with the Monil Virtual Fences sheep collars. Sheep have an extraordinary bond to place. Watching their behaviour within the app has been a privilege, becoming a wee part of their world as they navigate the hill.

Ever grateful for kind words 🤍🌿:

“Incredible place! best to arrive by foot from the main road to have this feeling of reaching a secret and precious place in the hillside. The place itself is a model of design & taste. Rural luxury. You really feeI you are taken care of in a delicate and non intrusive way. I highly recommend!”

We don’t usually show our faces on here. It’s because we think that Eastside is more about the place, the flora & fauna, the history, the landscape, the architecture, the stories and experiences; and it is.

Sometimes though it is about the people, their graft, sweat, soot and tears. You’ll notice we have been quiet on here. It’s because a lot of time, effort and brain-space has been dedicated to fire; the fact that in this country wildfire is predominantly fought by rural volunteers; and our changing drying climate.

The Green Cleugh wildfire took 7 days of our time in extinguishing, 31 volunteers and 397 volunteer hours. It has been a wake up call as we prepare the farm for fire. It has been an exhausting, worrying and complex time. I hope to share some thoughts on this in the coming days. Some preparations, thoughts on fire breaks and fuel load, mapping and infrastructure required for a changing climate, a changing landscape - and the planning required to protect that.

We have some wonderful summer escapes available this month and a wee last minute discount.
It’s one of our favourite times of year on the farm where the hill pastures are teeming with wild flowers, bees and skylarks. Pack a flask and take to the hills with our flora and birding books. Return to the sauna or hot tub after hiking the Pentland summits, curl up by the warming fire before sinking into the most comfortable beds.

Tonight we need to thank the Pentland (and beyond) community who pulled together to stop a wild fire in the Green Cleugh this afternoon. One that without the swift action of a few would have been significantly worse. The farming and gamekeeping communities were exceptional, utterly selfless and brave in what was a frightening and fast moving situation. The fire brigade offered huge support and the Sighthill team that were first on the scene were fantastic. I don’t use the term hero lightly but you were. Each and every one of you. Thank you thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The Wash House, small but perfectly formed. Bathed in light through summer it’s a tonic to the soul. Come stay, come hike, come sauna.

Lambing 26; you’re not quite done yet… but you were fun. A proper team effort with good weather and ewes in great fettle.

Michael joined what he calls ‘team sheep’ this year; where the rest of us chat stock, farmwork and development. It’s always good to have fresh takes on things as well as learning about what’s gone before; experiments that have worked - and those that haven’t are just as important.

Lucy has started studying nutrition (for humans) but it’s been fun bouncing sheep nutrition ideas off her; especially with the hill hefting and known areas of mineral deficiencies (just due to the underlying geology).

Mum and dad form the back bone of knowledge. The animals, the land and the sheep health and hospital experience built up over years of hard graft. But it’s good to keep learning, keep experimenting and keep going.

Part of that is building a brilliant resilient farm business with brilliant resilient stock. Those who are utterly suited and thriving in the Pentland landscape without inputs. While we’ve always been working towards this our new kit is going to be revolutionary. Each ewes weight, body condition score, and full health record will be scrutinised throughout the year. Experimenting can be backed with super useful datasets, some of which will be recorded on the fly.

It’s pretty high tech for a wee hill farm but boy are we excited. Ever inspired by others and never stop learning.
