Our owner Charles Lowther and his family lovingly restored the George and Dragon in 2008 and it’s now as beloved by locals as it is by visitors to the area. In every way, our roots are embedded deep in the rich history of our surrounding

landscape and we’re proud to rear, forage and grow the majority of the ingredients you’ll see on our menus ourselves, on our family farms and within our kitchen gardens at nearby Askham Hall. Eat with us, stay the night - we have 10 bedrooms you can choose from… Each is different, individually designed with furniture and art from Charles’ family’s collection, but all have fabulous beds, lovely linens and en suite bathrooms.

We’re serving up Charles Lowther's Shorthorn Beef & Bone Marrow Cheeseburger, stacked with cured pancetta, house-made relish, pickles, and served with crispy skinny fries.

The star of the show? The beef comes straight from our home-reared Shorthorn cows at Nordvue Farm. From pasture to plate, we control every step to ensure you get the richest, most tender bite possible. It’s farm-to-table in its purest form. 🐂

Lads! 👋

Meet some of our kitchen team: Sean, Adam and Luke. All three of them are passionate about plating our bountiful homegrown produce with style.

Sean has been with us for over 4 years now and loves to get stuck in, whether it's prepping mountains of vegetables or cooking breakfast for everyone staying with us; he always has a steady hand and is a joy to have on the team.

Adam joins us after a stint working as a head chef in France, serving skiers and mountain bikers delicious French cuisine. His passion for innovation sparks exciting new dishes, and his chemistry with our Head Chef, Paul, means ideas are constantly bouncing around the kitchen.

Luke, the greenhorn in the kitchen, is currently studying at Kendal College and with the expertise of everyone else on the team, he's in a great environment to help cradle his culinary career. Paul is overseeing the work experience side of his catering course, which is being fulfilled to the best of Luke's ability. We're happy to help cultivate new talent; we look forward to seeing how Luke develops his skills over the next year.

We’re delighted to unveil the newest addition to our collection of bedrooms at the George & Dragon.

Designed by Totty Lowther, Room 16 is filled with character, featuring her bespoke wallpapers, beautiful avian and botanical artwork, and thoughtful details inspired by the surrounding countryside.

The room can be arranged as either a double or twin and includes an en-suite bathroom with a spacious walk-in shower, the perfect place to unwind after a day exploring the Lakes or the Eden Valley.

We can certainly take a lot of the stress off if you're looking for somewhere to stay and dine if you're keen on tackling a stretch of the Ullswater Way or the entire route.
