A Michelin-starred restaurant with rooms in our historic family home
Askham Hall has been in our family since 1724 and is now home to Allium, our Michelin-starred restaurant. It holds many happy memories for us, is very special to us and we’d like to share it with you. We invite you to make it your own, whether it’s for your time dining with us, for a night, for your wedding or while you take it over exclusively for your own celebration or event. Enjoy our own home-grown, home-reared produce, wander our kitchen gardens, read the dedications in our family books, curl up in our library in front of the fire, take an aperitif in our Drawing room, lay your head for the night in one of our bedrooms. Askham Hall seems grand, and it’s certainly a beautiful building, but at its heart it’s a family home and so it’s lived-in, loved and relaxed – with well-worn flag floors, big squashy sofas, stacks of books, jugs of flowers from the garden and art and antiques that we’ve grown up with. Our 10th Beaujolais celebration is coming up, and there are just a few tickets left.

To mark our 10th year, Chef Richard Swale has created a special menu for the occasion, celebrating the flavours of France alongside free-flowing Beaujolais.

Flowers from our garden

The flowers at Askham Hall are more than just a finishing touch. Our gardening team picks fresh flowers from our own gardens twice a week, creating seasonal arrangements throughout the house, bedrooms and restaurant.

From garden to vase, it’s a simple, sustainable way of bringing a little more of Askham Hall’s gardens indoors and making the most of what’s growing around us.

Autumn at Askham Hall 🍂

The fells are turning gold and rust, the air has that crisp bite, and the fire in the lounge is already crackling. This is our favourite time of year.

Wake up in one of our 19 unique bedrooms with views over the grounds, wander the gardens as the topiary catches the low autumn light and have a look around the kitchen gardens too, as harvest time reaches its peak.

A royal connection

We were delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh to Askham Hall during her recent two-day visit to Cumbria, celebrating innovation and opportunity across the county’s farming communities and rural economy.

As part of her visit, she chose to stay at Askham Hall, which was a real pleasure for everyone here.

Her visit continues a long-standing royal connection with Askham Hall. Prince Philip stayed at the Hall every August from 1973 until 2011, when work began to transform the house into a hotel. The Queen also visited Askham Hall on a number of occasions.

This photograph, taken around 1995, is a lovely glimpse into the Hall’s history. On the left is Jackie, our Head of Housekeeping, who has given many years of service to Askham Hall and has a wealth of knowledge about the house and its history. On the right is Marie-Louisa Raeburn, who grew up at Askham Hall and has a lifelong connection to the house. She is the daughter of the 7th Earl of Lonsdale and sister of Charles Lowther.

It was a real pleasure to welcome another member of the Royal Family to Askham Hall, continuing a very special part of the house’s history.

In the cool quiet of the cellar, Nico is on the hunt for the perfect pairing to Chef Richard’s Tomato Consommé. 🍅🍷

We’re looking for something crisp, mineral, and just delicate enough to let the flavour sing without overpowering it. It’s all about finding that balance where the w**e lifts the dish without disrupting the delicate flavours.
