Askham Hall has been in our family since 1724 and is now home to Allium, our Michelin-starred restaurant. It holds many happy memories for us, is very special to us and we’d like to share it with you. We invite you to make it your own, whether it’s for your time dining with us, for a night, for your wedding or while you take it o

ver exclusively for your own celebration or event. Enjoy our own home-grown, home-reared produce, wander our kitchen gardens, read the dedications in our family books, curl up in our library in front of the fire, take an aperitif in our Drawing room, lay your head for the night in one of our bedrooms. Askham Hall seems grand, and it’s certainly a beautiful building, but at its heart it’s a family home and so it’s lived-in, loved and relaxed – with well-worn flag floors, big squashy sofas, stacks of books, jugs of flowers from the garden and art and antiques that we’ve grown up with. Join us from 1 – 4pm to wander our beautiful grounds, peek inside the house and wedding barn, and meet a handpicked selection of local exhibitors. Finding your calm in September 🍂

There is a distinct shift happening in the air right now. The heat of high summer is beginning to fade, replaced by cooler mornings and the first hints of autumn settling over the fells. It is the ideal moment to slow down before the year truly winds toward winter.

While our August Wild & Mindful Retreat is fully booked, there are still spaces available for our upcoming retreat from 27 to 30 September (Sunday to Tuesday). This is a special time to visit Askham Hall; the garden will be rich with late-season harvests, and the woods around us are just beginning their transformation.

Over three immersive nights, guided by Krish Thapa, you’ll have the chance to step away from the noise of everyday life. Expect peaceful afternoons of forest bathing and wild walks through the valley, balanced by nourishing, seasonal cooking from wild picnics under the trees to a signature tasting menu in our Michelin-starred restaurant. Treat yourself to a stay that blends country house historic charm with Cumbrian culinary excellence. Indulge in Chef Richard Swale’s six-course tasting menu in our Michelin-starred restaurant, Allium. A true celebration of seasonal flavours and generous hospitality.

Check in early afternoon and spend some time pottering around the gardens, before retreating to one of our characterful historic bedrooms, equipped with everything you need to unwind and refresh. Make your way down to the honesty bar for an apéritif by the fireside or on the patio. Nico will welcome you with a sizeable wine list and the evening's menu, as you sip a glass of our house champagne alongside canapés made from ingredients you witnessed growing in the gardens.

Once you've decided on your drinks, our caring team will guide you through to the dining room, where Chef Richard, Amos, and Margot will serve you six courses of the finest food they can craft from seasonal produce, all sourced from our grounds and the wider Cumbrian landscape.

We’ve been keeping an eye on their kitchen, and we have to say: Andrea is doing incredible things with that oven. From fresh garden ingredients to locally felled wood fire, everything about it feels authentic.

Chef's pick: Pizza No. 12. Mozzarella, mortadella, burrata & pistachio, finished with a drizzle of their homemade hot honey. It’s the perfect spot to round off a day roaming the fells above Ullswater.

Mark Teesdale and Ben Stockdale are the dynamic duo behind the food for our weddings. Mark brings an impressive culinary talent; he was the former head chef at Sharrow Bay, where he earned its Michelin Star, and he also brought Sharrow Bay’s legendary Sticky Toffee Pudding to Ciel Hotels. Ben has worked at our sister pub, the George and Dragon, under chef Gareth before joining us at Askham. Together, they’re crafting unforgettable dining for every celebration.

We are looking for someone with a positive attitude and reliable transport to join our close-knit team. Your role will involve preparing guest bedrooms and maintaining the cleanliness of public areas in this historic venue. Part-time hours (6–18 per week) are available to suit your availability.

Previous hospitality experience is advantageous, but reliability and a proactive mindset are what we value most.

Sunday Walks: Steel Knotts 🥾

One of the smaller of the Eastern fells, situated between Martindale and Fusedale, despite being one of the lower fells, it's rugged and dramatic, especially with the stone summit overlooking Howtown.

It's a great walk that can be started from Howtown, following Fusedale and its waterfalls before venturing off to the drystone wall-lined ridge that sits at the head of the valley, leading you back to the top of Martindale Hause.

Each morning begins with a hearty Lowther Estate breakfast, fueling you for exploration or simply for lingering with a book in the Stone Room on a rainy day.

On Tuesday evening, experience the heart of what we do: a six-course tasting menu at Michelin-starred Allium. Chef Richard Swale and his team showcase the finest seasonal ingredients from our kitchen gardens and estate, celebrating the true flavours of Cumbria. For this special break, the dinner is offered at £120 per person, a rare opportunity to savour world-class dining without the usual rush.
