This little chap is a daily visitor. He comes along the top of the stone walls from the woodlands above the house.

Meet Charlie the fell pony. He’s been hard at work extracting timber from our wood where we intend to start coppicing. First, we needed to thin the overgrowth to let some more light in, so here he is being shown the logs first and then as soon as he feels the weight of it through his harness, he’s away pulling swiftly up the incline. He clearly enjoys it. They have two ponies, one for the morning shift and one for the afternoon so as not to overwork them.

Did you know - ponies do less damage than the alternative of using heavy machinery to extract the timber?

Last week we had a fascinating day learning how to move cattle calmly without dogs or quad bikes. Huge thanks to Miriam Parker for sharing her knowledge and expertise with us. Every day’s a school day here at Gowbarrow Farm and Gowbarrow Old Hall!

In between rolling waves of wind and rain, I managed to capture some late Autumn colour on our Acer tree last week - just gorgeous. So looking forward to welcoming guests over Christmas and New Year - are you one of them?
