JUNE

This shot is my current favourite view of the flower field and it kind of sums up the chaotic, jumbly riot of mess and colour across the flower beds right now. This is my third year of being a 'proper' flower farmer, and I'm learning to let my version of perfect go - the field is not a garden and there are lots of untidy bits and weeds - but as a one-woman band I only have so many hours in the day. As long as there are plenty of flowers to pick all will be OK, and the wildlife thrives on the weeds anyway!

Spring has flown by in a blur of planting, picking, weeding, sowing, mulching, watering... all of which will continue now for the rest of the summer. The absolute best part has been launching the at the farm. Its been a privilege working with some amazing local growers and inspiring women to get the whole shebang up and running for this season. We are providing a one stop shop - one website, one pick up location - for florists to access the very best fresh local blooms in wholesale quantities. Its getting busier every week and I am so proud of what we have achieved together.

There is a busy summer ahead, and i can't wait for it to be filled with more flowers.

(Also - how amazing is this track? My incredibly talented friend has just released it, and it feels perfect for lazy sunny summer days)

ORCHARD

The orchard is one of our favourite parts of the farm. At this time of year the blossom and bulbs look absolutely glorious and it is buzzing with bees and birdsong.

My 40th birthday was back in deepest darkest lockdown (3rd lockdown, or 4th maybe?! urghhhh, remember those awful times?!). There was no celebrating, and we were exhausted from doing a huge building renovation while parenting a toddler, coupled with general coronovirus anxiety. But my wonderful family and friends all clubbed together to buy me various free trees to plant in a section of field we'd earmarked for an orchard. It was such a lovely surprise that brightened the darkest of days.

Over 5 years later it is coming into its own and looking like a proper orchard. We put in a small pond last year which already has newts joining the party. And our bee hives are thriving in there. The hedge you see was planted as a tiny row of 20cm whips that have now grown into a gorgeous native hedge.

Allium and camassia are slowly taking over the flowery reins from the masses of narcissi we've planted.

We've just added a new bench that was saved from being scrapped by our friends at so I've just enjoyed a cuppa while watching goldfinches dip in the pond and blue tit's gathering bugs from the apple trees.

Bliss.

HUB LAUNCH

I am still buzzing after the launch at the farm yesterday of our wonderful grower collaboration

After months of hard work over the winter, spent planning, brainstorming and connecting with our amazing team, it was great to share our vision with the extended grower group and loads of local florists.

Our Collective is the latest Hub to launch across an established network of UK wide . Our hub will enable florists across Bath, Bristol and beyond to get their hands on top quality, wholesale British flowers from local growers - all ordered from a single website with a central location collection point.

The ethos is founded on collaboration between growers and florists - and seeing the enthusiasm and support for British sustainably grown flowers and the local flower economy was so exciting - we can't wait for the shop to open next month.

If you're a florist itching to get your hands on quality blooms, more details are available

NEW TERM

I realise I haven't posted for AGES. Summer has been crazy busy, but in a good way - lots of catching up with friends and family between the constant juggle of the farm work and family life.

But just like that, it's the end of summer and the start of a new term.

And the return of school has, of course, bought rain, which I'm so very grateful for! Until this week, we've had 5 months of virtually no rain - the field is absolutely parched. Despite the challenging year, I've been so chuffed with the volume of flowers we're producing each week. Buckets and buckets going out - these pics of some earlier in the week.

More orders to be fulfilled in the coming weeks - there should still be lots to pick until the first frosts come to officially end the season.

COSMOS

One of our summer flower stars, the cosmos, has begun to bloom in the field. This morning, I was enjoying the beautiful shadows this 'Apricotta' cast on the bench, a gorgeous peachy pink blend.

Cosmos is an incredibly productive half-hardy annual that flowers from mid-summer until the first frosts. As long as we keep picking, it will continue to bloom.

Love it.

Happy Friday!

We're closing with some info about how you can support buying British.

If you are interested in buying seasonal, local flowers, or finding out more about the British cut flower movement, please visit the website.

And if you know any brides getting married locally, who might want to buy buckets of flowers to decorate their own wedding, please share my details! Links are in the bio for buying buckets or registering for a wholesale account.

Thank you to everyone who has engaged with my posts this week - it's been great to share a bit more information about what we do and why we do it. We welcome visitors to the farm if anyone wants to come and take a closer look.

COLLABORATION

Day 6 of , and today we're celebrating our community of local flower farmers and florists.

This beautiful picture taken at a wedding we flowered a couple of weekends ago perfectly sums up my experience of the British flower community.

Our beautiful bride had an amazing colour palette in mind for her DIY wedding and chose to use British flowers for her celebration. The wonderful Kate used our flowers to create this gorgeous bouquet and buttonholes. The bridesmaids used our DIY buckets to make their bouquets and extra table decorations the day before the wedding.

Our flowers were supplemented with some extra blooms from fab local growers and . All the flowers were gathered only a few miles from the wedding venue. It's wonderful to have such a supportive community of British flower enthusiasts around us.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Day 5 of and today we're sharing a behind the scenes look at working with British flowers.

Whixh is the perfect opportunity to share these absolutely stunning pictures that were taken earlier this spring, when the creative genius that is Jodie from came to the farm for an editorial photoshoot. Using our early spring flowers and blossom and other materials foraged from the woods, our barns provided the backdrop to her stunning creations, all captured perfectly by .

Usually, I pick flowers and pass them on to florists or brides, never seeing the end result - so for me, it was a real joy to see firsthand my flowers being used so creatively.

WHY BRITISH?

Celebrating - Day 4. So, what difference does it make as to where your flowers come from?

British flowers are grown and picked in step with the changing seasons, without the air miles and chemicals that come with most imported blooms we see.

It's illogical that 85% of the flowers we buy in Britain have travelled from elsewhere in the world, often sprayed with pesticides, for us to buy a 'natural' product. Imported flowers are usually bred to survive long journeys in refrigerated conditions, so they have none of the scent that you would expect from a bouquet of flowers, and a narrower range of varieties.

By choosing to buy local flowers, you are:

🌼 Supporting local biodiversity in your area
🌸 Cutting the long supply chain and reducing your carbon footprint
🌻 Giving a boost to the local economy
🌹 Getting a wider range of flowers that will smell amazing

I have learnt a lot through being a member of , who have a friendly network of over 1,000 growers across the country. Next time you're sending flowers, check out their website directory to find a local supplier. There are growers the length and breadth of the country.
