What a magical sight along the river yesterday evening.
As the cows wandered through the grass, they stirred up tiny flies. Swallows swooped and darted effortlessly through the air, diving low and fast to catch their meal mid-flight. Their speed and precision were incredible to watch — a reminder of how everything in nature works together in the most amazing way. 🐄🕊️

Moments like this are what make life in the countryside so special. 💚

At 14 miles from River Valley, Portreath Beach is a sandy cove, Portreath meaning sandy cove, set in a steep valley. To the western end of the beach are high cliffs and another smaller cove which is separated by the high tide.

At the other end of the beach you will find a granite wall which protects the narrow historic harbour. This harbour was once a busy port, importing coal and exporting copper, but in recent times, the harbour is now only home to a few fishing boats. When you are there, it is worth taking a walk along the quayside to look at the perilous harbour mouth which ships once sailed through.

On the left hand side, the beach has a small stream running down to the sea. A few hundred metres off the coast, is the huge Gull Rock, which as the name suggests is something of a haven for seabirds of all kinds.

The beach backs onto the small town offering most facilities including several shops, toilets and cafés.

Like most beaches on the north coast of Cornwall, it is popular with surfers and bodyboarders.

Lifeguards patrol from mid May until the end of September. There is a seasonal dog ban from the beginning of July to the end of August.

The 2026 theme, “Forever Flying High,” celebrates everything that soars above Penzance – from seabirds over Mount’s Bay to the Scilly helicopter, Cornish sky spirits and bold visions of future flight. ✨
Rooted in the revived Feast of St John, Golowan has grown into one of the South West’s most loved festivals, attracting thousands each year with its vibrant mix of heritage, creativity and joyful street celebration.
During the festival, Penzance comes alive with colourful parades, street theatre, live music, dance, workshops and bustling makers’ markets. The iconic Mazey Day procession takes centre stage, filling the streets with giant sculptures, imaginative costumes and inspiring community creations. Alongside this, the Quay Fair and festival markets showcase local makers, food producers and independent traders.

At 7 miles from River Valley, Penlee House Gallery & Museum, in Penzance, showcases the art of West Cornwall. Theses collections include works by the Newlyn School and Lamorna artists. It’s the only Cornish venue specializing in these early 20th-century artists. Penlee House preserves and makes accessible the history and culture of West Cornwall.

Originally built in 1865, Penlee House is set within sub-tropical gardens in Penlee Park. The building itself was once a Victorian family home belonging to the wealthy Bramwell family. The house and grounds were bought by the town after the second world war.

In the museum you can explore thousands of objects, from archaeological finds to ceramics and social history. The museum also covers local history and fashion.

They have the Orangery Café, where you can enjoy coffee, homemade cake, or a light lunch with a view of the park.

A programme of changing exhibitions celebrates the skill and craftsmanship of painting in west Cornwall in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The gardens around the gallery and museum houses a children's play park.
