BUCHAN NESS
Our Monday lighthouse is Buchan Ness, for many years our next door neighbour to the south.
Buchan Ness was the first lighthouse in Aberdeenshire to exhibit a revolving or flashing light, caused by a frame of reflectors rotating between sunset and sunrise. The lighthouse has retained its original character of a flash of white every 5 seconds.
In 1910 the lighthouse was fitted with its first lens - a composite hyperradial-first order - producing a light visible upwards of 20 miles. That lens is now in the Recognised Collection here in Fraserburgh, and is due to be displayed for the first time in the next year or so. The lighthouse has operated with LED banks since 2012 following the removal of Buchan Ness’ second lens.
The tower’s distinctive red band was painted on in 1907 making that station a recognisable tower for shipping in daylight hours.
