📰 GOT ANY OLD NEWSPAPERS?

It's George here. The nights are drawing in and there's a chill in the air, which means it's nearly time to get my fire going again.

To do that I need newspaper, and plenty of it. If you've got a pile of old papers by the back door, I'd love to take them off your hands. Just bring them in and hand them over at the bar whenever I'm open. Plain newsprint only, please; glossy magazines don't burn well.

Every sheet helps keep my hearth warm for the whole of Plympton this winter. Thank you!

❤️ PLYMPTON, I NEED YOUR HELP ❤️

It's George here. I've stood on this spot for a good few hundred years, and this year I want to give something back to the people who've kept my doors open.

So I'm choosing two local charities to be my Charities of the Year – and I want YOU to pick them.

Is there a cause close to your heart? A community group, a hospice, a food bank, an animal rescue, a youth club – anything that makes a real difference here in Plympton. Tell me.

HOW IT WORKS

Before Tristan says anything, a word from me.

The last team looked after me well. They kept my doors open, my b**r good and my regulars coming back, and they handed me over in better nick than they found me. Thank you. You're always welcome at my bar.

Thanks George. Hello Plympton. I'm Tristan, and from this week I'm George's new business partner.

I'm South West born, spent a good many years up north, and I've finally come home. I love animals, so dogs are welcome in the bar, provided they bring a well-behaved owner. Good behaviour gets rewarded with treats. The dogs, I mean. Mostly. It's just me, full-time, no company behind me, and I've got plans for this place. Some of them I'm sure about. Some I'd rather hear from you first.

So tomorrow, Friday, from 2pm, the bar's open for a meet and greet, and I mean that literally. Come in, have a drink, and let's talk about the pub. I'll share what I've got in mind: a proper community local, the function room back in use for clubs, teams and families, the events coming this winter, the rooms upstairs, food down the line. And you tell me what you've missed, what you'd bring back, and what would get you in on a Tuesday night. I'll have a notebook. I'll use it.

Saturday is the proper opening.

No food for now. That's coming, and you'll hear it here first.

A New Chapter for The George Plympton

We’re delighted to confirm that a new permanent tenant will be taking over the George Inn on Monday 28 September.

As you know we originally stepped in on a temporary basis with St Austell Brewery to keep the George open while a permanent tenant was found. It has been a pleasure to look after the pub during that time, and we’re thrilled to be supporting the handover as it moves into its next chapter.

The new tenant will introduce themselves and announce their plans in due course. We will be passing over details of future accommodation and function bookings, and they will contact those customers directly to discuss their arrangements.

For now, new accommodation and function bookings remain on hold while we complete the handover.

We’d like to extend a huge thank you to our wonderful team, customers and the wider community for all your support during our time at the George. It’s been a real pleasure getting to know you all, and we’re grateful to everyone who has helped us look after this much loved pub.

We wish the new tenant every success and look forward to supporting a smooth handover. Please join us in giving them a warm welcome, with more details about the George’s next chapter to follow soon.

*When is the handover?*

The new permanent tenant will take over on Monday 28 September.

*Why are you guys leaving?*

We took on the George under a temporary arrangement with St Austell Brewery to keep it open while a permanent tenant was found. With that tenant now ready to take over, we’re supporting the handover.

*Who is taking over, and what are their plans?*

The new tenant will introduce themselves and share their plans in due course. We’ll leave those announcements to them.

*I already have a room or function booked. What happens now?*

We will pass your booking details to the new tenant, who will contact you directly to discuss and confirm your arrangements. If you have an urgent query before the handover, please contact the current team.

*Can I make a new accommodation or function booking?*

New bookings remain on hold during the handover. We’ll share an update when arrangements are confirmed.

*Will opening hours, food or events change?*

The new tenant will announce their plans. Until then, please contact the current team with any questions about your visit.

*What does this mean for your other pubs?*

There’s no change to our other pubs. Each is managed individually with its own team, and they’ll continue as usual. This handover relates only to the George, where our role was always to look after the pub while a permanent tenant was found.
