We’ve been installing tree pits at Sherford using the TreeParker® system, supplied by Green-tech Ltd - including root barriers, crate systems and soil backfilling to give the trees the best possible start.

Not the most visible part of the job, but one that really matters long-term 🌱

Progress taking shape at Sherford

We’ve recently completed the block paving path and boundary wall, and have now started the soft landscaping around this open space.

A steep, engineered bank with erosion matting in place - not an area where traditional seeding would be reliable.

We’ve completed a hydroseeding project at Prince Maurice Road for BJP Developments, giving the slope the coverage it needs to establish properly.

Hydroseeding is a spray-applied mix of seed, mulch and nutrients, helping with:
• Faster, more even growth
• Moisture retention
• Erosion control
• A stronger, healthier finish

Looking forward to seeing this establish over the coming weeks.

Mental Health Awareness Week this year focuses on action.

For us, that’s not about big statements it’s about what’s in place day to day.

• working in green spaces
• keeping sites safe and well organised
• making sure people have the right support around them

That’s why we’ve taken action at YGS by introducing an Employee Assistance Programme for our team and their families, alongside sharing a simple guide with small everyday things that can help support wellbeing.

It’s just noticing when someone’s not quite themselves and taking a moment to check in.

Getting ready to start works at Nansledan, working with CG Fry & Son as part of the wider Duchy of Cornwall development.

A full landscaping package including planting, wildflower areas, turfing and fencing - all contributing to a growing community.

From bare ground to planted

Tree and whip planting is now in place by the bridge connecting Phase 2D to Phase 3 at Sherford, alongside new barrier fencing to protect the area as it establishes.

The planting helps soften the space visually, while also creating a natural barrier around the culvert entrance - combining practical protection with longer-term landscape impact.

April was one of those months where everything moved at pace - different sites, different stages and plenty going on behind the scenes.

From installing knee rail along banked areas, to full ground prep - rotovating, soil removal and getting areas ready for turf - it’s been about setting things up properly from the start.

There’s also been block paving going in, hydroseeding in progress, and the kind of day-to-day work that keeps sites moving including a bit of telehandler action loading out materials.

And somewhere in between all that… a 60th birthday celebration 🎉

That’s the reality of a month on site a mix of groundwork, finishing touches, logistics, and the people behind it all.

On to May.

Prefer doing something practical instead of sitting at a desk all day?
We’re recruiting 4 Apprentices to join YGS Landscapes this October.
You’ll get hands-on experience in:

🌱 Turfing & planting

🪵 Fencing & decking

🏗 Hard landscaping

🚜 Grounds maintenance

🛠 Using real machinery on real projects
You’ll work on live sites across Plymouth - from housing developments to commercial spaces while studying one day a week at City College Plymouth

💰 Paid position

📅 Start date: 1 October 2026

⏳ 2-year apprenticeship

📍 Based in Plympton

Gain recognised qualifications including:

✔ Level 2 Horticulture or Landscape Construction
✔ Emergency First Aid
✔ Industry certificates in machinery & pesticide use
This isn’t work experience.

It’s a career pathway.
