Today we welcomed five new apprentices to YGS Landscapes as they begin their two-year apprenticeship journey with us, in partnership with City College Plymouth.

Day one has been all about getting settled in, learning more about the business, working through our onboarding and induction process, meeting members of the onsite team and getting to know one another as they start this journey together.

Over the next two years, they’ll combine their studies at City College Plymouth with hands-on experience across our landscaping operations, developing practical skills, industry knowledge and experience along the way.

We’re proud to continue investing in apprenticeships and creating opportunities for people to learn, develop and build a career within the landscaping industry.

A big welcome to our five newest members of the YGS team. We’re looking forward to seeing where the next two years take you.

Not every visit from the police is bad news! 👮‍♂️

Yesterday afternoon, our team received a welcome visit from the police, who were returning tools stolen during a recent break-in to one of our company vehicles.

Thanks to our asset identification system, the police were able to establish that the tools belonged to YGS Landscapes and return them directly to our team on site.

It’s always worth knowing the full story and this one had a very welcome ending.

A huge thank you to the Devon and Cornwall police involved for their excellent work in recovering our equipment and getting it back to its rightful owners.

Two of our new vans have now been sign-written and are ready to join our teams out on site.

Supporting our commercial landscaping and grounds maintenance operations across the South West, these latest additions keep our teams on the move as we continue delivering projects for our clients.

Twelve years ago, Sherford was fields.  We’ve been the landscaping contractor here since the very beginning - installing the infrastructure, planting the green spaces, and then looking after them long after the hoardings come down.

That’s the part people don’t always see. A new town doesn’t stop growing, and neither does the maintenance. Every new phase means more verges, more open space, more trees to establish. Our team is out there all  year-round keeping it all looking the way it was designed to.

Twelve years in, and we’re still proud to have our name on it - and prouder still to have picked up another award for our grounds maintenance work.

We’ve won another BALI National Landscape Award 🏆

We’re incredibly proud to announce that YGS Landscapes has won a 2026 BALI National Landscape Award for our grounds maintenance work at Sherford, and it is one that means a great deal to the whole company.

Our relationship with Sherford began in 2014 and, over the past 12 years, our role has grown alongside the development. Today, our teams maintain an extensive and incredibly varied green infrastructure estate - from the country park, sports pitches and urban parks to ponds, trees, hedgerows, ecological habitats and the living wall at Sherford’s entrance.

But this award is about much more than the scale of the maintenance operation.
Over those 12 years, we have developed a genuinely collaborative way of working with Sherford. Our involvement extends beyond maintaining what is already there; we contribute practical knowledge as new phases are developed, help establish new landscapes and work proactively to support their long-term resilience and quality.

And it was particularly rewarding to see that recognised in the judges’ feedback:

“On the face of it, a straight forward maintenance for a very large development, but the layers and the proactive approach of the contractor make it more than just fulfilling a 'Maintenance Contract'. YGS have a very close working relationship with the client and a deep understanding of the site/project. The client sees them more as a partner than just a maintenance contractor.”

That last sentence means a lot to us, because it reflects exactly what we have worked to build at Sherford since 2014.

People from across YGS have been involved with Sherford at some stage during that journey, so this really is an achievement for the whole company and testament to the knowledge, commitment and hard work of everyone who has played their part.

Well. That was August.

Another month of high temperatures, a hosepipe ban, a solar eclipse and even a couple of unexpected four-legged visitors to the office.

Meanwhile, across YGS, the teams have been getting on with the job.

August saw our people working across sites throughout Devon and Cornwall, alongside training and development back at the yard and all the usual activity that goes on behind the scenes.

The prolonged hot and dry conditions have continued to present challenges across landscaping and grounds maintenance, particularly when it comes to establishing and maintaining grass and planting. As always, it means adapting to the conditions and planning the work accordingly.

Our August round-up captures a bit of everything that went into the month - people, projects, training and everyday life at YGS.

Here’s August in a nutshell.

We went back to Exeter Science Park at the end of July 🌾

This was bare red Devon earth when we started - pots set out in rows, semi-mature trees waiting. Now it's the second summer since planting, and it's already reading as a mature landscape.
60+ semi-mature trees, over 10,000 plants and grasses, and over 7,000 bulbs.

Underneath it all, the trees in the hard landscape sit in engineered soil cells beneath the paving, so the roots have room to spread, and the rain gardens hold and filter surface water on site.
