Autumn is a lovely time for a midweek stay here. The weather’s still holding, the evenings are drawing in just enough for a proper fire pit night and the coast path’s at its best with the light and season starting to change.

Joe is heading to Nepal with three others to attempt a Guinness World Record, the highest altitude sail ever recorded, over 5,000 metres above sea level.

It’s all in aid of the Pahar Trust Nepal, raising money to rebuild a school in Gorkha that still serves 270 children after being destroyed in the 2015 earthquake, alongside schools hit by recent floods and landslides. The team are covering their own costs, so every penny raised goes straight to the school, and donations are currently being matched pound for pound by the Clarkson Foundation, up to £50,000.

The school run might be back, but that doesn’t mean weekends away are off the cards.

Muddy boots, fire pits lit, kids finding their own kind of fun outdoors, whatever the weather.

We’ve got tents and shepherd huts both available, so there’s plenty of time for a few more cosy adventure evenings before winter sets in.

This Halloween we’re running a lantern walk telling the story of the White Lady, said to haunt the water at Radford Lake.

Hot food and drink will be on hand to keep you warm, and if ghost stories aren’t quite your thing, there’s a free bat walk around Radford Park too.

Before she came to Hooe Lake, Lynher had already lived a few different lives..

Built in 1896 by James Goss at Calstock, she spent decades hauling coal, limestone, wood, sand and even dung up along the Tamar. Lynher was one of the working barges that kept this whole area moving before lorries took over.

During the Second World War she was requisitioned to help hold barrage balloons over Plymouth Sound, and by 1952 she had been abandoned altogether, left in a quarry for over thirty years before anyone brought her back. She is one of only two Tamar barges left anywhere, which is not a bad history for a boat now moored quietly at Hooe Lake.

Next week the seasons properly turn. The equinox lands on the 22nd, equal day and equal night, and by the 26th there’s a full Harvest Moon rising over the quarry.

Sat within the quarry, a sky full of stars above, it isn’t often Stones & Stars lives up to its own name quite this literally, and there’s no better weekend to stay and see it for yourself.

Get the fire pit going, wrap up in one of our blankets whilst watching the evening unfold above you from the comfort of one of our Shepherd Huts before cosying back up with the fire inside ☕️ 📖

Meet the newest addition to the Stones & Stars family. Her name is Lynher, a historic Tamar barge. We are so pleased to help give a new lease of life to this important Plymouth ship which used to load limestone from our quarry.

She will be available to hire for small private parties, networking events, coffee mornings, or other celebrations on board, with first class private dining built around whatever you need, from tea and breakfast to a full three to five course meal.

Watch this space for sailing adventures next year.
