There’s a difference between running a campground…

…and designing a basecamp.

A campground provides space.

A basecamp creates overlap.

The terrain brings people there.
The design determines whether they connect.

RoamHaven is exploring how to build places near great outdoor destinations that are:

• financially sustainable
• intentionally designed
• and built to be held long-term

This isn’t about short-term flips.

It’s about building places that matter.

I’ve been thinking about something lately.

Most of my experiences with strong “basecamp culture” have come through climbing.

But the more I pay attention, the more I see the same dynamic in other outdoor spaces too.

Surf camps.
Ski lodges.
Trail running retreats.
Small MTB hubs.

Different sports — same pattern.

People show up for the terrain.
They stay because of the community.

It makes me wonder whether what we’re really building isn’t sport-specific at all…

It’s terrain-adjacent gathering places designed to make connection easy.

Climbing is my anchor.
But the model might be bigger than one sport.

Still exploring.

Over the past few weeks I’ve been studying what makes certain adventure basecamps feel different.

Not just convenient. Not just near great terrain.

Different.

Across climbing hostels, surf camps, ski lodges, and mountain towns — the places that stand out tend to share a few traits:

• People are clustered close enough to connect naturally
• There’s a shared ritual (often meals)
• The layout encourages interaction instead of isolation
• The hosts set a tone that makes it easy to belong

It’s less about luxury.

More about intentional design.

RoamHaven is grounded in that question:
What would it look like to build terrain-adjacent basecamps in the U.S. designed for connection — not just accommodation?

Still studying. Still learning. But the patterns are clear.

One of the last climbers’ basecamps I stayed at was in Turkey.

You show up solo… and by day two you’ve got shared meals, new climbing partners, and someone borrowing your chalk bag.

These places make adventure feel smaller and connection feel bigger.

The U.S. has world-class outdoor destinations.
We just need more spaces designed for this kind of experience.

I met these friends at a climbers’ basecamp in Sardinia. We arrived as strangers, bonded over routes and stories, and somehow kept saying “yes” to climbing together—three trips later.
