The Cottage Bed & Breakfast, Polperro

The Cottage Bed & Breakfast, Polperro Three beautiful en-suite bedrooms in the 17th century main property and a purpose built Swedish cabin with its own private sun terrace in the garden.

All this, and a bloody good breakfast, too!

Flowers, flowers, everywhere! We’re having glorious sunshine for days then mad storms so the roses bloom like crazy then get buggered up by the storms. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE a good storm, and most of them are happening overnight which is awfully polite of them, but they do play havoc with the delicate blooms!

We’re off UpCountry overnight to grab our daughter’s uni belongings and bring them back so rather than miss all the lovely flowers, I’ve picked a handful of a few and I’m having a bash at fermenting them.

Here, we have rosebuds, chive flowers and a mixture of rose petals and violas. Could be a disaster - could be a triumph. Watch this space!

I want to thank Polcoombe so much for inviting me up to teach yesterday’s Fermentation Workshop. What a lovely time we had. It’s such a beautiful place to go and just be. If you can go and learn something potentially life changing, too - how cool is that?!

Massive thanks, too, to Becky Whittaker-Day, The Quirky Assistant, for making it all run smoothly and keeping us in line, and for taking these lovely photos.

As always, massive thanks are due to Heather for her incredible generosity with her time and her beautiful land.

Finally, thanks to the participants for their energy and enthusiasm, and gusto in tucking into the fermented feast at the end. We had cheddar & Jalapeño sourdough, chickpea barberry & preserved lemon sourdough, cultured butter, labneh, fermented cauliflower, beetroot, radish and ginger, kimchi, hot sauce and a red cabbage, orange, coriander and chilli sauerkraut. Not to mention a bottle of red wine. Well, if you’re tasting fermented foods.

Wishing you the strength to wait a couple of weeks (maybe one, if it gets hot again!) to break into your beautiful kimchi, sauerkraut and fermented veg. At least your kefir is ready for drinking today 😁

Look at this glorious cormorant (I really wanted it to be a s**g because I’m secretly incredibly immature, but it’s a cormorant) drying its wings after an early morning fishing expedition. Right at the end, you can hear the honking of the harbour gate mechanism, as it was opened to let a boat out for another early morning fishing expedition. Bliss to be up and out, early.

What a difference a day makes! Stormy up top, this morning. Luckily, it’s always warm and dry in the pubs, cafés and restaurants of Polperro! Speaking for myself, I am very much looking forward to staying dry (in one sense, at least) in AlFreshCo, while enjoying their bottomless brunch this afternoon. If you’ve missed that this is happening, you’re in luck. They’ve had a couple of tables unexpectedly open up. GO GO GO! THIS IS NOT A DRILL!

Oh what a beautiful moooooooorning! Lovely early walk up the cliffs, bit o’ yoga in a secluded spot (getting more zen, yoga has stopped making me want to shout something rude or kick something), and finished just as these two beauties chugged back into the harbour full of fish. If Carlsberg made mornings…

Well, the last sourdough course before the summer is done and dusted, and boy! What a belter! Three gorgeous loaves, here.

We’ve had everyone from complete novice bakers to very experienced yeasted-bread bakers to experienced sourdough bakers on this course and it has been inspiring to see how much people from all those baking backgrounds have taken away from the course. Seeing the loaves that everyone goes on to bake at home makes me so incredibly proud of you all (and a little bit of myself, not going to lie!), so do keep them coming. I honestly never tire of seeing them!

The courses will resume in October, and I’m looking forward to it already. Please comment below if you’d like to be kept in the loop and I’ll try to find this post in September 🤣. Equally, follow The Cottage Bed & Breakfast, Polperro page for updates.

Happy baking!

Being next door, we’ve witnessed first hand these guys working day and night to get the shop fitted, stocked and ready to open today, in time for the bank holiday weekend. We’re very excited to have a butcher and green grocer next door. The question “what are we having for dinner tonight” just got a whole lot less irritating!

(Spoilers - we’re having some totally divine-looking rib-eye steaks!)

Thanks, Steve & Michelle. And welcome to the village, Field & Fork.
