If you have something special to celebrate, or even if you don't but want to treat yourself to something unique and spectacular, then The Duke of Portland Boathouse is for you! An utter gem of chic luxury in probably the best location in all of the magnificent Lake District.

An easy walk to all that Pooley Bridge has to offer, but utter tranquility and harmony once you close the heavy oak door, manoeuvre through the well-equipped kitchen and snug bedroom (with solid copper bath discretely overlooking Ullswater) and out onto the magnificent balcony with panoramic views over the entire lake and surrounding fells! There is no better, more romantic or breathtaking spot for a sundowner or early morning coffee anywhere in the world!
I'm not one to quote Tina Turner of Kirsty Allsopp and sidekick Phil, but this is Simply The Best and the most magnificent Location Location Location you could possibly imagine!!

We loved being the Duke and Duchess of Portland, but for far too brief a reign......

Mermaid spotted near historic Ullswater boathouse

Workers at the historic lakeside building say several early-morning starts have resulted in them seeing a “figure with a shimmering tail” close to the shoreline. The sightings have prompted plenty of curiosity amongst the staff and visitors staying at the boathouse.

Staff have fondly named the shimmering figure “Duchess of Ullswater”, 'Duchie" for short.

A spokesperson said the name felt fitting for the lake’s supposed new inhabitant. “Ullswater has always been full of stories and legends, so it’s nice to think a mermaid might have chosen to settle here,” they said.

While there is, of course, no scientific evidence that mermaids inhabit the lake, the tale is spreading quickly throughout the local community with crowds flocking to the Boathouse to see if they can catch a glimpse.

Visitors are being encouraged to keep an eye on the water – just in case Duchie decides to appear again and Cumbrian Cottage Holidays are offering a free night at the Boathouse for the first photographer to capture the mermaid.

Spring has reached Ullswater and the weather over the last few days certainly confirms longer sunnier days are ahead.

Wordsworth discovered "a host of golden daffodils" whilst exploring Ullswater, could these be descendants of those very daffodils? Either way they are a promise of lighter nights, spring sunshine, and frolicking lambs.
