Hillside is a four-bedroom holiday home in the north Cornish village of Port Isaac. It sits halfway up the hill on the east side, at the top of the village, and is within a few minutes' walk of both Port Isaac's small harbour (known as the Platt), and the beach at Port Gaverne. Port Isaac is the home of Doc Martin (Port Wenn), and is as unspoilt as the television series portrays. In addition to at

tracting television (and film) productions, Port Isaac also offers a serious culinary experience. For example, Michelin star chef Nathan Outlaw opened the Fish Kitchen, here in 2013. Art fiends also find a number of galleries in Port Isaac, such as Katie Child's Cliffside Gallery, with its gorgeous and colourful paintings of the area. Other activities include wine tasting at the Camel Valley vineyard, coastal walks (the North Cornish coast is renowned for its spectacular views), fishing, kayaking, and of course surfing at nearby Polzeath. Hillside itself is a large late Victorian property, renovated in 2012 and 2020, which sleeps 9 people. Two of the four bedrooms are ensuite, with kingsize beds. On the top floor, you will find a twin bedroom, while the last (largest) bedroom has both a single and a kingsize bed. These two top rooms share the larger family bathroom. The kitchen is well appointed, with a range-cooker and all the kitchen accessories that serious cooks may need. For those more interested in entertainment, there is a 42" full-HD television with Freeview, and a blu ray/DVD player (with access to BBC iPlayer and YouTube). And for internet needs, Hillside offers unlimited Broadband for streaming, Skyping, emails etc. No cats, sorry.

If you are in Cornwall this week, as my Hillside guests are, it is the best place in the UK to see the solar eclipse on Wednesday! Have fun and be safe! 🩵

If you’re in Cornwall on Wednesday 12 August 2026, you do not want to miss this! We should see the most significant solar eclipse since 1999, when 90% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon – rising to 95% in Cornwall, which will be the best place in the UK to watch (if the clouds play ball!)

When choosing where to watch the solar eclipse in Cornwall the key is to choose somewhere high with a clear horizon and view to the west. As the sun will be low in the sky, a flat, west-facing beach or high cliff-top with a clear sea view is ideal.
