'Come & Create Your History Here At The Plas...'

This is your "Home away from Home" from the moment you arrive right up until it's time to leave. Immerse yourself in the historic - yet relaxed charm, combined by a certain "bon viveur" that is the epitome of Country House Living - the epitome of Plas Tan-Yr-Allt. Perched high on a hillside and nestled amongst some 40 acres of ancient woodlands wit

h long lensed views over the Glaslyn Estuary, Ffestiniog Steam Railway to the plantagenet castle of Harlech and mountains beyond. Tanny as its affectionately known by its current owners, and those in the "know", was the first Regency Villa in North Wales built by William Madocks the esteemed philanthropist and entrepreneur. His vantage point "spectaculaire" to observe his newly constructed Cob, the then gateway to the areas mountain quarries and bustling international port of Porth Madoc (Madocks Port / Porthmadog) and Tre Madoc (Madocks Town / Tremadog) with its aptly named London and Dublin Streets respectively. All designed and built in typical Madocks style - the architecture very much thought out and in the latest "rigueur du jour". Captivated by the idyllic of all settings the 18th century literary superstar Percy.B.Shelley completed his most famous of works Queen Mab "All things are recreated". Other noted residents include Elizabeth Billington the opera singer of her day, E.F Benson of Mapp & Lucia provenance, Miss Mary Hilda Greaves the aunt of Portmerion founder and architect "extraordinaire" Sir Clough Willams-Ellis - all to name but a few. Having recently refurbished the Plas the current owners Howard and Mark are offering three luxuriously appointed bedrooms, complete with antiquities and period features, all named after some of its previous residents: The William Madocks Bedroom, Shelley's Theatre and Miss Hilda's Bedroom . All rooms come complete with an array of creature comforts consistent with a property of this type (please refer to individual room description for further detail). Lavishly appointed en-suite bathrooms with slate underfloor heating complete the picture. We very much welcome you to our home here at Plas Tan-Yr-Allt.

Lost in Translation... 📝🦅
You have to love our wonderful overseas guests! We recently hosted four lovely Americans in our historic Shelley’s Theatre and William Madocks bedrooms.

While we pride ourselves on our rich history, it seems a little bit of it got lost across the Atlantic this week... 🇺🇸✈️🇬🇧

One of our guests genuinely believed that Shelley’s Theatre was named because the great romantic poet, Percy Bysshe Shelley, was in there performing gothic medical experiments like Doctor Frankenstein..! 🥼⚡️🧟‍♂️

To set the historical record straight:
No monsters were created in the making of this B&B!

Shelley’s Theatre is actually the inspiring space where Shelley penned his great works, completed his masterpiece Queen Mab, and gave dramatic poetry recitals to a captive audience during his time here from 1812 to 1813.

Mary Shelley may have written the legendary sci-fi novel, but Percy was strictly a man of stanzas, not science experiments! ✍️✨

We absolutely loved hosting this brilliant group, even if they were sleeping with one eye open, waiting for a thunderstorm! ⚡️

Come for the poetry, stay for the peace and absolutely zero mad science. 😀

📜 A Brilliant New Discovery at Plas Tan-Yr-Allt! 🌟
Did you know that before Percy Bysshe Shelley famously made Tanyrallt his home from 1812 to 1813 another legendary literary figure slept under our very roof?

While researching Denis Florence MacCarthy’s historical compilation, Shelley’s Early Life, this afternoon I've uncovered a wonderful connection involving the celebrated English poet and legendary London wit, Samuel Rogers (author of The Pleasures of Memory).

According to a published letter from Rogers to Thomas Moore, written from Aberystwyth on September 19th, 1811, a year before Shelley arrived, Rogers spent a night right here at William Madocks’s estate:

"I slept a night at Wm. Madocks’s. He is a great lord in his little city of Tre-Madoc, he has built a church, and a market-place, and a town-hall, and a square, and a street, where the sea roared a year or two ago and this week holds an Eysteddfodd or Meeting of Bards... The comet is very brilliant here, and every evening makes a brilliant path across the water." (Moore's Memoirs Vol viii, pg 94)

🌊 The Shelley Connection
Just one year later, in 1812, Shelley moved into the very same "cottage extensive and tasty enough for the villa of an Italian prince." When the sea violently threatened Madocks’s great engineering feat, the Tremadoc breakwater. Shelley famously exerted himself to raise funds for its preservation, even heading the subscription list with a massive promise of £500. *Shelley met Rogers in Pisa Italy in 1822 just months before Shelley tragically drowned in July 1822.

🏛️ A Haven for Wandering Bards
As MacCarthy beautifully notes, "Tanyrallt seems to have been a favourite resting-place for other wandering bards besides Shelley." It is incredibly thrilling to find definitive proof that Samuel Rogers walked these same rooms and gazed out at the Great Comet of 1811 from our grounds, just months before Shelley arrived to leave his own permanent mark on history.

Plas Tan-Yr-Allt has always been a sanctuary for literary greats, and we are proud to keep this rich history alive today. Come and walk in the footsteps of the Romantics!

A Beautiful Reflection of Plas Tan-Yr-Allt ✨
We are absolutely delighted to share this wonderfully detailed 5 Bubble Tripadvisor review from our recent guests, Sally and Lesley. It is always a pleasure to read such kind words about the experience we strive to create here at The Plas. ✨

Stunning Country House 🏡

"We had a very warm welcome from Mark, we stayed in Miss Hilda's room! A beautifully decorated room, with everything we needed for a weekend stay. I particularly liked the history information provided via QR codes, great touch. Our view was stunning. Having a bath whilst looking at the view was so relaxing (plenty of hot water too). The bed was very comfy. 🛋️

The grounds are stunning, with a mesmerising view, we sat on the veranda & comfortable benches too, roses in the garden & a quaint pond with a visiting duck! 🦆 The drawing room where guests could relax was another lovely touch and so many antiques to admire. 🌹

Breakfast was spot on, wonderful customer service from Mark, the food was top notch, thank you Howard for the best poached eggs. 🍳 All aspects of the house were extremely clean and the pot pourri smelt lovely. We ate at Y Sgwar restaurant in the village, nice walk down from the house, amazing food. The information we received from Mark & Howard after we booked was most helpful, especially not using Google Maps to find them! :). We will definitely stay again, thank you Mark & Howard you have a beautiful country house." Sally & Lesley 🌟

Thank you, Sally and Lesley, for choosing to stay with us, and for highlighting everything from Miss Hilda's room to Howard's poached eggs. We look forward to welcoming you back to the veranda in the near future..! 🥂
