Plas Tan-Yr-Allt Historic Country House B&B William Alexander Madocks This page is all about William A Madocks & his associations - Founder of Tremadoc & Portmadoc who lived here at The Plas.

Enter as strangers - Leave as friends......

This is your "Home away from Home" from the moment you arrive right up until it's time to leave. Where complete rest and relaxation are guaranteed. Immerse yourself in the historic - yet relaxed charm, combined by a certain "bon viveur" that is the epitome of Country House Living - the epitome of Plas Tan-Yr-Allt. Perched high on a hillside and nestled

amongst some 40 acres of ancient woodlands with long lensed views over the Glaslyn Estuary, Ffestiniog Steam Railway to the plantagenet castle of Harlech and mountains beyond. Tanny as its affectionately known by its current owners, and those in the "know", was the first Regency Villa in North Wales built by William Madocks the esteemed philanthropist and entrepreneur. His vantage point "spectaculaire" to observe his newly constructed Cob, the then gateway to the areas mountain quarries and bustling international port of Porth Madoc (Madocks Port / Porthmadog) and Tre Madoc (Madocks Town / Tremadog) with its aptly named London and Dublin Streets respectively. All designed and built in typical Madocks style - the architecture very much thought out and in the latest "rigueur du jour". Captivated by the idyllic of all settings the 18th century literary superstar Percy.B.Shelley completed his most famous of works Queen Mab "All things are recreated". Other noted residents include Elizabeth Billington the opera singer of her day, E.F Benson of Mapp & Lucia provenance, Miss Mary Hilda Greaves the aunt of Portmerion founder and architect "extraordinaire" Sir Clough Willams-Ellis - all to name but a few. Having recently refurbished the Plas the current owners Howard and Mark are offering three luxuriously appointed bedrooms, complete with antiquities and period features, all named after some of its previous residents: The William Madocks Bedroom, Shelley's Theatre and Miss Hilda's Bedroom . All rooms come complete with an array of creature comforts consistent with a property of this type (please refer to individual room description for further detail). Lavishly appointed en-suite bathrooms with slate underfloor heating complete the picture. We very much welcome you to our home here at Plas Tan-Yr-Allt.

A wonderful day for history at The Plas yesterday! 🕰️ We were thrilled to have a visit from Ysgol Eifionydd as they explored Percy Bysshe Shelley's time here as part of their school curriculum. 🏫 It’s always a privilege to bring local history to life!

Did you know he finished his first epic poem 'Queen Mab' right here at The Plas and we even have a connection to Mary Shelley's Frankenstein? 🧟‍♂️

Howard even sent the teacher a detailed account and investigation of an author and scholars' thoughts on the 'supposed assassination attempt' that took place here in February 1813! 🕵️‍♂️ Was it real or a dramatic invention? The debate continues!

And for a fun twist: Shelley claimed to be a staunch vegetarian, but was actually caught trying meat at a local hostelry! 🍖

Who knew Shelley had so many intriguing secrets right on our doorstep?

Guest Review Paul & Nicola. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

We’ve had an excellent 5 Bubble Review on Tripadvisor, from lovely guests Paul & Nicola, who stayed in the William Madocks Room for 3 night’s earlier in the month.

Here is their review:

If there was a 6-Star Rating, it would fit here.

From first contact it was friendly professionalism, the room was fantastic but not just the room the whole place is magical, like stepping onto the set of Downton Abbey, but more upper class!

The breakfasts were spot on; we even had an afternoon tea served in the drawing room!

Bet Lenny Henry never had that in his hotel chain!

If we ever in this area again we will 100% be back!

Miss Hilda's Bedroom.

Mary Hilda, known as ‘Hilda’ was born here at The Plas in 1855. Daughter of John Whitehead Greaves founder of Llechwedd Slate Caverns and aunt of Sir Clough Williams- Ellis the creator of world famous Portmeirion. Known for her generosity and kindness she made several changes to the house which are evident today including a mural of ‘The Triumph of Neptune’ commissioned no less than by Sir Clough himself.

Famed for her legendary afternoon tea - Guests can enjoy ‘Miss Hilda’s Classic Edwardian Cream Tea’ in the Drawing Room or on the Veranda during the warmer months.

Miss Hilda’s with its quaint Half Tester – Be wrapped up and cossetted by her old world charm whilst enjoying spectacular views over the Glaslyn Estuary to the sea and mountains beyond.

Guest Review: Greg & Jo 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

We’ve just had a fantastic review from Jane & Adam from England who stayed in Miss Hilda’s for 2 night’s earlier in the month!

Here’s what Jane had to say...

Sumptuously comfortable and peaceful stay.

Gorgeous comfortable historic house in very peaceful natural environment with lovely elevated view towards the estuary.

Mark was a most considerate and attentive front of house host. Every detail was attended to.

The breakfast was delicious. The afternoon tea in the drawing room indulgent.

I have come home and had to buy a butter curler inspired by our stay!

All was excellent.
