If you’ve walked along the eastern shore line you’ll have spotted this and probably like me wondered what it was!

Eastney is one of our favourite locations to photograph from the air 🚁💙 For those that are wondering what this concrete structure is... It was part of the Mulberry harbour, one of many that were constructed as temporary portable harbours developed by the United Kingdom during the Second World War.

These Phoenix caissons were sunk in lines to create the breakwater. They were floated in order to move them, but when water was let in they would sink to the sea bed.

They facilitated the rapid offloading of cargo onto beaches during the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944 🌊
