As you can see from this photo of me taken in 1977. I have always enjoyed a sea swim - and as I'm only 5 in this pic I'm hoping you all don't spit your keyboard venom all over my post it's exhausting 🥺

Yesterday we went swimming at the Eastney end of Southsea and WOW did the comments come in! Apparently we were swimming in “pure sewage”.

So I checked the ACTUAL facts:

🌊 Eastney is officially rated GOOD for bathing water quality by the Environment Agency.

🌊 On Sunday 9 August, when we swam, I can find no recorded sewage discharge from the Fort Cumberland Road Eastney storm overflow.

🌊 Eastney and Southsea East are two different monitored bathing waters.

🌊 The area currently rated POOR is Southsea East — between the Pyramids and South Parade Pier — NOT Eastney.

🌊 The Environment Agency tests for E. coli and intestinal enterococci, and bathing-water classifications are based on years of monitoring.

🌊 Eastney also has live warning signs — 🟢 green when there’s no recent sewage alert and 🔴 following a recent release.

Do we have a sewage problem? YES. Should we demand cleaner seas? 100%.

But saying Eastney is permanently “pure sewage” simply isn’t what the official data says.

Check the alerts. Check where you’re swimming. Stick to the facts. 🌊💙

Well, the wait is over! From next week, our magical unicorn will be popping up at locations across Portsmouth, giving you even more chances to find it and add it to your trail collection.

📚 You'll be able to find the unicorn at a Portsmouth library every Monday, before it heads off around the city throughout the rest of the week.
