Many guests ask us about the history of the barn. Penshenkin Barn is a Welsh long house probably built in the 16th or 17th century. They were long narrow houses where people and livestock lived under one roof. The left hand side of Penshenkin was the home of the livestock with a hayloft above. The farmworker may have slept in the hayloft which would have been lovely and warm from the animals below. The right hand side would have been the living quarters for the family. The downstairs room would have been the kitchen and living room with the fire as the only source of heat. The original piece of wood above the fireplace is still there today, imagine the secrets that piece of wood could tell us! It would have been very cold and the people living here probably kept their coats on inside. Fortunately, our guests today we will be kept nice and warm with the underfloor heating and the roaring Woodburner. Penshenkin was used as a livestock building up until about 15 years ago. I remember cows being housed in there during the winter months and ewes and lambs sheltering in there during lambing season. Thankfully, our guests don’t have to share their accommodation with cows or sheep anymore. But they can watch all the livestock roaming the fields from the comfort of the barn.
