Nothing to see here, but much to hear! The tawny owls have fledged at least two (we think three) chicks up in the ancient oaks.
These wheezy squeaks can be heard each night as hunger kicks in.
The adults will continue to feed the fledglings for a few weeks, so listen out for them if you are visiting this summer!

This tangerine-size clump of moss, woven together with spider web and suspended from a branch of conifer, is the nest of our smallest bird - the goldcrest.
These are often several metres up, but this one was within reach, and using a delicate iPhone endoscope I was able to get my first ever view of the pea-size eggs (second image), and show them to the group of people I was guiding around Redwood Valley on a nest-focused bird walk as part of our first Woodland Skills course. Not many people can say they have looked into the nest of a goldcrest, a bird that weighs little more than a teaspoon of water!

Nuthatches usually nest in natural cavities high up in mature trees, but occasionally take to nestboxes, including this one less than 3m from the ground, deep among the ancient oaks here at Redwood Valley.
This made it easy to rig up a mini video camera and record some action.
When a hole is a bit too big, nuthatches will plug it with mud to leave an optimal hole, but in this case it was clearly perfect for this pair. However, that didn't stop them applying some mud to the box to plug a gap at the top!
Just listen to the insect-like calls of the young.

While carrying out the guided bird walk (focusing on finding nests), as part of the Woodland Skills course, we took some time out to rig up a couple of cameras.
This male blackcap decided that keeping the tiny young in this delicate nest took priority over feeding. Turn up the volume and settle in for a meditative minute of woodland bliss.

Day 3 of our Woodland Skills course: Patrick leads the most fascinating bird walk where we discover various nests - goldcrest, nuthatch, pied flycatcher, wren, mistle thrush, a ground-nesting pheasant and more - and use an endoscope to take a careful peak inside! And our weekend ends with a cleansing nettle and ground elder soup with crusty sourdough πŸ’š
