Academie Glorianna is a non-profit making educational organisation. Its purpose is to educate, undertake study of and conduct research in Historical European Combat, through interpreting period documents and analysing period weapons and other relevant sources and articles. We primarily train in the style of George Silver (c. 1560s–1620s), a gentleman of England who lived during the late 16th and e

arly 17th centuries. His treatise 'Paradoxes of Defence' was published in 1599, followed in around 1605 with 'Brief Instructions' which remained unpublished until 1898. Silver recommends a highly dynamic system which he deemed effective for duelling, street defence and the battlefield, rather than the contemporary rapier systems, primarily only effective for duelling. Silver's system is characterised by his "flying out" (moving out of distance and therefore to safety) and prioritising survival over style. This was in stark contrast to many fence treatises of the Age - Antonio Manciolino's 'Opera Nova' (c. 1523) and De Sainct Didier's 'Traicte Contenant Les Secrets Du Premier Livre Sur L'Espee Seule' (c. 1573) - preferred fighting with style and grace, even if it meant losing the fight.

Step back 4,000 years into Clitheroe’s past…

In 2018, a remarkable early Bronze Age burial site was uncovered on the outskirts of Clitheroe during work on a new housing development. Nine cremation burials were unearthed, set within a circular ring ditch and dating from around 1915–1620 BC.

Now on display at Clitheroe Castle Museum, the cremation urns offer a rare insight into ancient burial practices. https://www6.apps.lancashire.gov.uk/w/webpage/event-details?eventid=3753615

Excavated at Higher Standen Farm by Archaeological Research Services Ltd the discoveries reveal a glimpse into Lancashire’s prehistoric past.

This exhibition, curated by Lancashire County Museum Service’s Collections & Conservation Team, brings these stories to life, connecting us with the people who lived and farmed here thousands of years ago.
