It's been great to have cattle back on the land. They are just as good as ecosystem engineers as beavers are. They are an environmental disaster if you farm them in the wrong way, but that would also be true of beavers.
Our own cattle did a lot of the hard work of getting our meadow up to county wildlife site standard. It now needs some grazing to keep it up to that standard.
They also keep the woodland rides clear without using fossil fuels.

Like a lot of self employed contractors, we’ve struggled with how much we should charge. Unlike employees, we don’t get sick pay, holiday pay or employee pension contributions. There are also a lot of costs associated with running a business.
We made a spreadsheet to work out what a fair amount to charge is. When we went to the Woody Gathering organised by the Land Workers Alliance. We realised how many other people could benefit from the spreadsheet, so we put it on our website so anyone can download it.
We want to help the Land Workers Alliance to come up with a proposal around fair rates for forestry contractors, but the spreadsheet is useful to any self employed contractor.
We’d really like some feedback on the spreadsheet and on what a fair rate for contractors to charge is, so we’ve put a survey form on the website with it. If you know a self employed contractor who might benefit from it. Please share this link with them:

What is a Fair Hourly or Day Rate for a Self Employed ContractorWe’ve put this page on our website to invite comments and feedback and to help self employed contractors work out what they should be charging. Please use the form at the bottom of the page to make your comments. We feel there is a nee...

We took a day off work to go and look at trees. It's the first time either of us have been to Kew and it was well worth a visit. We'll definitely go back.

We've been searching for treasure on our land. First we found some rusty nails and fencing wire. Then we looked around the campfire and found this lump of metal and pendant. We're keen to get the pendant back to its rightful owner. If it's yours, tell us what is on the other side and we'll send it to you. If you know anyone who might have sat around our campfire, please get them to look at this post. Cheers!

We’re looking for people who own woodland in or near Devon, who are interested in increasing biodiversity. We’d like to write a woodland management plan for you, based on your objectives and your woodland’s potential. Woodland management plans are free for any woodland over 0.5 hectares (1.25 acres). They’re a prerequisite for the Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier grants, which will contribute to the costs of managing your woodland. As part of the process, we’ll survey your woodland and produce maps showing features and proposed operations. We’re happy to visit your woodland without any obligation, to discuss your objectives and see if a woodland management plan is right for you.

We spend a lot of our time traveling around Devon and a bit into the surrounding counties, exploring woodlands as part of the process of writing woodland managment plans. For those of us who spent their childhoods escaping the adults by exploring woodlands, this is heaven.

A year ago today we announced our opposition to offsetting. It had a mixed reaction, with many objections coming from people who profit from offsetting and a lot of people who are not in the trade not really understanding how offsetting works. A year on, we stand by our statement and have found support for our position to have grown as more people get to grips with the concept.
Whether you agree or disagree, let us know what you think of our stance.

Why We’re Set Against OffsettingMore and more ecological work is being funded by offsetting. Planning applications require what is known as Biodiversity Net Gain or BNG. The idea of this is that any biodiversity lost in carrying out a development is compensated by a greater increase of biodiversit...
