It seems Garden Cottage has some new residents… 🍄🏡

And they've chosen a rather unusual place to make themselves at home!

Perched right on top of the Garden Cottage gate, these two tiny mushrooms have appeared, apparently quite happy with their new address. 😄

No booking required, no luggage to unpack and a lovely garden view. We can't really blame them!

It's these funny little surprises that make wandering around Layhead such a pleasure. There's always something new to spot if you take a moment to look. 🌿💚

We wonder how long our little gatecrashers will stay! 🍄

Some mornings are worth getting up early for… 🌅🐑

The sheep were enjoying the morning sunshine at Layhead, with a little mist still hanging over the fields in the distance.

That beautiful golden light, the quiet countryside and not a lot else happening.

Well, apart from the sheep, of course! 😄💚

One of those lovely moments that makes you stop and appreciate where we are.

A long walk in the Yorkshire Dales.

Back to your cottage, boots off, kettle on.

Something good for dinner, nowhere else you need to be and a cosy evening stretching ahead of you. ☕💚

That's one of our favourite things about an autumn break at Layhead, the days are still made for exploring, but coming back and getting cosy is half the pleasure.

Autumn may be arriving… but somebody hasn't got the message. 🌼🍂

While the trees around Layhead are beginning to turn gold and orange, these lovely flowers are still putting on quite a show.

That's one of the things we love about this time of year, summer hasn't completely disappeared, while autumn is quietly arriving all around it.

And against an old Yorkshire stone wall, they look rather at home. 💚

Just down the road from Layhead… 💚

This is our little village of Rathmell, looking particularly lovely in the autumn sunshine.
Dry-stone walls, quiet lanes, fields all around and Holy Trinity Church sitting at the heart of the village.

It’s one of those places where you can simply set off from Layhead for a wander and enjoy being in the countryside, no elaborate plans required. 🥾

Sometimes the quiet places are the nicest ones to discover.

Sometimes the best walks are the ones where you simply set off and see where the path takes you.

This is Watery Lane, just a little wander from Layhead, looking rather lovely in the September sunshine. ☀️

No rushing. Just a quiet country lane and that irresistible urge to see what's around the next corner. 💚

Which way shall we go? 🥾👈👉

One of the nicest things about staying at Layhead is that you don't have to travel far to find somewhere lovely to wander.

Monday's walk took us along the quiet lanes around Rathmell past dry-stone walls, sheep in the fields and some rather wonderful Yorkshire Dales views.

And there, keeping watch in the distance… Pen-y-ghent. ⛰️

Sometimes you don't need a grand day out.

A pair of walking boots and a little wander from the door will do very nicely. 💚

Which would you choose, a gentle country-lane wander or straight up Pen-y-Ghent? 😄

It’s happening… autumn is arriving at Layhead. 🍂💚

The trees are just beginning to turn, with flashes of gold, orange and red appearing amongst the green.

There’s something rather lovely about this in-between stage, still plenty of green around us, but little signs everywhere that the season is changing.

And yesterday we even had blue skies and sunshine to show off the colours. ☀️🍁

Autumn walks, cosy cottages and the Yorkshire Dales. We think they go rather well together. 🥾🏡
