📆 TUESDAY 17TH FEBRUARY 2026
📍 FORESHORE ROAD, SCARBOROUGH, YO11 1PB
🥞 Scarborough’s much‑loved Shrove Tuesday traditions return with an afternoon of pancake‑flipping fun and seaside skipping. The celebrations begin at 12 noon, when the town crier welcomes the Mayor, who rings the famous Pancake Bell on North Street to officially start the day’s festivities.
🏃♂️ From there, crowds head to Aberdeen Walk for the lively pancake races, where teams of two compete in fancy dress, tackling an obstacle course while flipping their pancakes. Judges keep a close eye on speed, costumes and how much pancake actually stays in the pan — all in the hope of winning the coveted golden frying pan.
⛱️ After the races, everyone makes their way to the Foreshore for the long‑standing tradition of skipping by the sea. Generations of locals have taken part in this cherished custom, with the road closed to traffic so families, friends and schoolchildren can skip together in the salty sea air.
🔔 The ringing of the Pancake Bell is a Scarborough hallmark dating back to the 1800s, once signalling to households that it was time to start frying pancakes. Today, it remains a proud part of the town’s heritage, bringing the community together for an afternoon of fun, nostalgia and seaside charm.
