Our hazelnut tree is a favourite little hangout, and autumn is one of the loveliest times to visit - crisp mornings, golden landscapes, cosy evenings by the fire and, if you’re lucky, a little flash of russet fur amongst the leaves.

There’s so much creativity hidden in our little corner of Cumbria, and we’ve decided it’s time we started sharing some of it with you. 🤎

First stop: Farfield Mill, just up the road from The Green, and the studio of our friend Katriona.

Katriona is a handweaver, working from a tiny loom in Studio 4F. Her inspiration comes from the landscape around her - the fells, tarns, rivers and ever-changing skies of the Howgills, as well as the wild seascapes of the Hebrides.

We asked her to create something especially for The Green Cumbria, using our autumnal colour palette.

The result is this beautiful, richly textured fabric, woven from local Cumbrian wool and a mixture of new and end-of-line yarns from Huddersfield and Ilkley.

Even the backing fabric has a story - it’s deadstock, surplus fabric that might otherwise have gone to landfill. The cushion pads are handmade from calico and filled with British wool.

So we get some rather beautiful new cushions for The Green, but more importantly, we get to showcase the talent of someone who lives and works right here on our doorstep.

And this is only the beginning.

We’ve got a few more little collaborations in the pipeline with local makers - including a rather lovely squirrel made from the remnants of this very fabric, and a project with another talented maker working from Farfield Mill.

We love the idea that, little by little, The Green can become a place where you not only come to stay, but discover a little more about the people, skills and creativity that make this corner of Cumbria so special.

We always hope for beautiful weather for our guests at The Green Cumbria, but days like today are a good reminder that there’s something pretty special about the weather we get here too.

After some intense rain, the clouds lifted over Wild Boar Fell and Mallerstang Common, leaving these incredible cloud inversions rolling across the landscape.

It immediately took us back to a family trip we had to Iceland - that same slightly otherworldly feeling of looking down on the clouds rather than up at them.

So yes, we’ll happily take the sunshine… but we’ll take a bit of wild weather too. It can put on quite a show. ☁️

Ravenstonedale Agricultural Show & Sheep Dog Trials is one of those brilliantly traditional days out where you can watch sheep being judged, admire vintage tractors and cars, marvel at the flower arranging and photography competitions… and then watch folks throw eggs at each other. 😂

There was welly throwing (not for the faint hearted!), plenty of four-legged action and, of course, our personal highlight: the egg throw and catch.

We did not enter. Our confidence in our catching abilities did not extend quite that far. 🥚😂

A properly fun, glorious day in the valley - and one we’ll definitely be back for.

The Cross Keys at Cautley famously features in many walking guides, including those by Alfred Wainwright. But its history is every bit as interesting - and it’s well worth a visit in its own right.

Stop in for a drink of sarsaparilla or nettle cordial on your way to Cautley Spout, or treat yourself to one of their very reasonably priced breakfast buns. With no parking fees, there’s really no excuse! 😉

The walk to the waterfall takes less than an hour, making this a fabulous little stopping point whether you’re heading out for a proper walk or simply fancy stretching your legs.

And the best bit? It’s just 10 minutes from The Green Cumbria. 💚

Sometimes the best part of a stay is simply sitting still. 🌿

You don’t always have to head out for a walk or drive somewhere to find nature - sometimes it comes right to you.

This beautiful red squirrel has been making regular visits to the garden, helping herself to the hazelnuts and giving us a lovely reminder to slow down, look closely and enjoy what’s right outside the door.

At The Green Cumbria, nature isn’t somewhere you have to go and find - it’s part of the stay. 🐿️🌿

Always keep your eyes peeled… you never know what you might spot 👀🐦

We were on our way to The King’s Head in Ravenstonedale when we spotted this little dipper on the river. What a lovely surprise. 🥰

A few dipper facts: they’re Britain’s only truly aquatic songbird, and they can walk along the riverbed underwater, searching for insects and larvae. They’re also able to see underwater thanks to a transparent third eyelid!

Just another little reminder that some of the best wildlife encounters happen when you’re simply going about your day. 🌿💦

Those incredible lenticular clouds appeared on the skyline today, looking almost too perfect to be real. ☁️

And then, just when I thought the show was over… the sun appeared through the haze with a beautiful halo and a hint of rainbow. 🌈✨

You never quite know what the sky is going to do around here.

Puddles, fresh air, rainbows and that unmistakable smell after summer rain. 🌦️🌈

After weeks of dry weather, the recent showers have felt like a gift. The birds are still singing, the colours seem brighter, and a simple walk between the showers feels a little bit magical on a normal weeknight.

The best days aren't always the blue-sky ones, we love these dramatic skyscapes and a little wild weather too 💚
