CWM ELAN / THE ELAN VALLEY 🩡

Cwm Elan, situated just to the West of Rhayader in the heart of Wales, and only a 20 minute drive from our farm & holiday cottages - is a river valley famous for breathtaking natural views & reservoirs.

In the 1890’s, The Birmingham Corporation built a series of reservoirs across Wales to supply the city with a reliable, gravity based water source. The Elan Valley, chosen for a number of different reasons, became home to four dams, a 73 mile aqueduct, and the Elan Village over a 13 year period.

Although a massive engineering feat, and a beautiful preservation of Victorian architecture - the dams represent another story: the flooding of local farms, homes, buildings demolished, and the eviction of more than 100 Welsh people with little compensation.

Cwm Elan is now a protected area due to its rich biodiversity & exceptional rugged landscapes. Making up 1% of Wales in total, the area is now both designated as an International Dark Sky Park and a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

It’s absolutely worth visiting this truly unsung treasure of mid-Wales - with mesmerising cycling and hiking trails, a lovely visitors centre, golden wild swimming spots nearby… and lots more. Plus, you can stay here at while you explore πŸ’š
