It was a solo trip the up the hill this morning. All will be revealed in the dog update below.
Blonde Bullet - recovery is good and she is moving so well. It has been 9 days since her operation and we are now up to 3 x 10 minutes walks a day. Her stitches are coming out on Tuesday. It will be nice to have an update from the consultant on how well he thinks her progress is.
Ginger Fella - On Monday morning towards the end our walk, an out of control dog came from nowhere and attacked Rhubarb. He sustained nasty wounds to his shoulder, front leg and back of his paw which needed urgent medical treatment. He has 5 staples in the shoulder wound and the others are being left to heal. The one on the back of his paw is really deep and big and there isn't enough to stitch together so we just need to let it heal. We had a follow up consultation on Thursday and the vet is very happy with the wound healing so far and we just need to keep walks to a minimum for infection control of the large wound on the paw.
Rhubarb got stuck in and gave as good as he got. I was very proud. I helped with a couple of boot kicks before managing to grab the attacking dog by the scruff of its neck and pull it away. Once the owner caught up with us then grabbed the dog off me and restrained it. He was mortified this had happened. The dog had slipped its collar. The other dog has sustained injuries too and has a ripped ear as a reminder of that bad life choice.
Whilst it was an unfortunate situation, I am glad it happened to me and Rhubarb and not someone else. If I had both dogs with me or just Gadge it could of had a different outcome. She wouldn't have fought back and if she had run that could have damaged her recovering elbow beyond repair.
Also if this had happened to an older or less able person, a smaller breed, puppy or older dog they may not have not survived the attack, so I am glad it picked a fair fight. Obviously Rhubarb was clearly winning!
The staples will be removed next week and then we will have a better idea of the wound healing and when he can get back out again. I will need to reintroduce him to dogs as I do not know whether the incident will have made him reactive.
So far, he has been OK, but I will manage it carefully. I remained calm throughout the whole incident, in my usual emotionally detached way, so I am hoping that has helped by not heightening his protect and response mode. Fingers crossed anyway.
We are now trying to track down the owner. I want to understand what he is doing to prevent this happening again. The dog needs to be muzzled and on secure harness as a minimum. This dog was whippet/terrier cross from a rescue charity so you would think it would have been assessed for this before being rehomed.
With two different sets of medication and pill popping schedules, restricted duties, wound treatment, it is like running a dog nursing home! I am run ragged!
Have a lovely weekend everyone!
