Jervaulx Abbey, family owned since 1971 by the Burdon Family. It is the largest privately owned and privately maintained Cistercian Abbey in the U.K., this means we rely 100% on the entry contributions and weddings to keep this incredible monument safe and open to the public. With our oak framed Summer House licensed for legal ceremonies,
We can host large and small weddings with different options

. Our paddock is filled with wild grass with a avenue leading to your marquees location. The Abbey is kept with nature, peace and tranquillity in mind. With over 200 wild flowers and fauna allowed to flourish in a safe way. A safe haven for wildlife. As a family we closed our Tearooms in 2021, which we had opened in 1994. We made the decision to concentrate on other parts of jervaulx. We have a beautiful 4 bed BnB opening in august 2021 and two hand built luxury Shepard’s huts, visit House and Huts

‼️Damage/Removed Stone and Misbehaviour‼️
Do you know this man? April 1st around 1pm, any information please message us.
We have been sent this image, which appears to show a man handling and/or removing stone from Jervaulx Abbey.

This is not harmless behaviour. Jervaulx Abbey is a protected Scheduled Monument, and it is illegal to carry out unauthorised works to a scheduled monument. Damage to a protected monument is also an offence under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979. (Historic England)

This kind of behaviour has a real financial impact. Every incident takes more time, more labour, and more money to put right — resources that should be going into caring for and protecting the abbey, not repairing damage caused by thoughtless individuals.

We know where the stone has been taken from, and we can not find it within the site any longer, so can only assume it has been taken. This matter has been passed to the police, but social media is our only option to get the message across about the type of behaviour we have to endure.

If this is you: where is the stone?

This kind of behaviour is disgusting. We put so much into protecting and caring for the abbey, only to see people treat it with such disrespect.

If you cannot respect the abbey, do not come.

We regularly find more damage after weekends and holidays. Climbing on walls, disturbing stonework, and interfering with the ruins all cause real harm to this historic site.

Please respect Jervaulx Abbey.
Do not climb on the walls.
Do not move stones.
Do not damage our heritage.
Do not abuse the site, we as a family open the site to the public to enjoy.
