A 200-year-old converted stable in the Highland hills — a stone's throw from the NC500.

Everything about The Stable Bothy has been thought through. Picture windows framing the valley of Strath Fleet, a log burner at the heart of it, king-size bed with luxury linen, rainfall shower, and a welcome basket of local artisan produce waiting on arrival. Binoculars, walking poles, and a picnic blanket for the days out. Scrabble and good books for the evenings in.

Red kites circle overhead. Seals bask at Loch Fleet down the road. Royal Dornoch, Glenmorangie, Dunrobin Castle, and the Falls of Shin salmon leap are all within easy reach — and the NC500 is right on the doorstep for those who want to keep moving.

On clear nights, the Northern Lights have been known to put in an appearance above the patio.

One option is Dornoch Station Hotel in the charming nearby town of Dornoch. It recently had a stylish makeover and offers relaxed dining in its bar, as well as a more formal restaurant plus lots of comfy corners to relax in and enjoy a coffee or drink.
