North Atlantic Bottlenose Whale or Northern Bottlenose Whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) Moray Firth, Scotland. This is one of a 'group' of four animals that have been in the area for the last 2 days. This species is sexually dimorphic. This is a male as evidenced by the lighter coloured head and very steep almost square-shaped forehead or melon. The yellowish patches are likely due to diatoms. Northern or North Atlantic Bottlenose Whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) Cromarty Firth, with the town of Cromarty in the background. North Atlantic Bottlenose Whale (Hyperoodon ampullatus) or Northern Bottlenose Whale. Cromarty Firth near North Sutors. Four animals were spotted by Gordie Bryce of Ecoventures this morning. We enjoyed amazing views of these animals throughout the day to the delight of our passengers. To put the rarity of the sighting in context, for Sarah the owner of Ecoventures, this is her second sighting in 32 years. Hopefully the whales will move back out to sea as they are are deep water species. Thanks to wwww.ecoventures.co.uk

Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) feeding on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Chanonry Point, Scotland. And before someone chips in with the usual moronic comment about the dolphins eating all of the salmon I suggest you have a closer look at the aquaculture (salmon farming) industry. I am often asked what action can be taken to protect the dolphins. Don't eat fish or seafood of any kind is my response. 28 July 26 TIMR4616.

Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) Tail, or flukes. It is also sometimes called the caudal fin though this term is more usually associated with fish whose tails are vertical. Bottlenose dolphins have a pronounced median notch between the two tail flukes. In common with many individuals this one has multiple rake marks, likely from other individuals of the same species.
