Stargazers: get ready for the Perseid meteor shower across our dark skies
The Perseid meteor shower is active between 17 July and 24 August, with the number of meteors increasing every night until it reaches a peak in mid-August, after which it will tail off.
This year the peak falls on the night of 12 August and before dawn on 13 August. Conditions are predicted to be especially favourable to see the up to 60 shooting stars per hour, as it coincides with the Moon's First Quarter phase, allowing for even darker skies.
You can look out for the Perseids wherever you are but areas with as little light pollution as possible, such as the Herefordshire countryside, offer the best chance of spotting meteors - our Stargazers' Guide To Herefordshire has a map of some fantastic locations in the county: https://www.visitherefordshire.co.uk/trip-ideas/our-top-picks/stargazing
The meteors will appear to originate from the constellation of Perseus; you can download a stargazing app to find the exact location to look at.
The best time to see the Perseids will be between midnight and 5.30am, so why not book a stay in Herefordshire for a midweek break or an extra long weekend to enjoy this celestial event.
