This is a Gale Stone, a coal mining rights marker at the stile between fields on footpath in the parish.
It was allocated by the Verderers Court of the Forest in around 1834.

A congregational chapel was built in the village in 1798. During the ministry of John Horlick, 1801-51, the congregation grew and in 1804 a gallery was erected in the chapel and in 1813 the building was enlarged. The chapel had 25 members in 1900. It closed after 1960 and was used as a carpenter's store and was in disrepair in the late 1980s.

Since then, it has been renovated and is now an attractive house.
