165 years of outstanding history & dedication to the Protestant Faith, British Heritage & Orange Tradition
🧡💜
ON THIS DAY 165 years ago Rutherglen Orange and Purple District 20 was formed for our first 3 lodges with Rutherglen True Blues LOL 12 & LOL 93 transferring from District 3, joined by the newly formed LOL 73 meeting in Wasons Hall, King Street, Rutherglen on Thursday 21st March 1861 with Bro William Donnelly becoming the first Worthy District Master.
Our District lodge grew over the years with Jehovah Jireh Lol246 in 1877, Rutherglen Thistle Temperance LOL 213 in 1921 & King William’s Own LOL 255 in 1948 as well as previous lodges who went on to help create other Districts around Glasgow such as LOL 54, LOL 73, LOL 108, LOL 166, LOL 191, LOL 293 & LOL 320 and the now defunct LOL 25
In the last 165 years we’ve seen many changes such as our first youth lodge with Rutherglen Protestant Boys Juvenile LOL 30 forming in 1909, later renamed Rutherglen Covenanters Juvenile LOL 30 as well as a Junior lodge in Junior LOL 137. Our First Woman’s lodge in 1911, Brother Brisbys Chosen Few LLOL 34, later joined by Sister Thomsons Memorial LLOL 173 in 1928 & Pride of Rutherglen LLOL 183 in 1931 as well as LLOL 202 who transferred out to help create another District.
Our District seen many moves in our early years from our founding meeting held in Wasons Hall in King Street and documented meetings behind held in John Crouth Hall in Bouverie Street, Quigley’s Hall in Landemar Drive, Rutherglen Old Parish Church, Stonelaw Parish Church and even Rutherglen Town Hall. However in 1926 the District secured our first Orange Hall when we purchased the building of St Stephens Episcopal Church on Regent Street which served us well until our move to the current Rutherglen Orange Hall which was purpose built in 1959 and further extended in 1976 by the addition of a lounge and bar.
Rutherglen has hosted 3 major Boyne celebrations in the town in 1906, 1919 & 1937 - the last of which reportedly attracting 70,000 people to the town that day.
Our District is proud to be celebrating our 165th anniversary at our anniversary ball this evening but are equally proud to be joining the celebrations this year with the towns 900th anniversary of being bestowed as a Royal Burgh. A year to celebrate in our town with many great events lined up later this year.
165 years of Rutherglen’s Orange History
900 years of our Royal Burgh
And n infinity of our joined traditions still to come
