From today you can buy the famous Alban Bun (the original Hot Cross Bun) from the Abbots Kitchen, St Albans Cathedral

Did you know that the Alban Bun is the original Hot Cross Bun and was created in St Albans Cathedral back in 1362 by Brother Thomas Rocliffe, who would distribute the buns to the poor on Good Friday?

The original recipe remains a closely guarded secret, but ingredients include flour, eggs, fresh yeast, currants and grains of paradise or cardamom.

This year's baker, Redbournbury Mill, has stayed true to the original recipe of the bun, which is distinctive in its appearance due to its lack of a piped cross. Instead, the baker cuts the cross into the top of the bun with a knife.

The buns are available from the Abbots Kitchen, St Albans Cathedral from tomorrow.
