Our iconic has had a lick of paint to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles.
Some phone box :
The Kiosk number 6 was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott (designer of Liverpool Cathedral, Bankside power station -now Tate Modern etc)in 1935 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and consequently known as the “Jubilee Kiosk” Further K6s were produced and distributed from 1939 (known and K6 MkII) and can be distinguished by a more shapely crown base, as opposed to the flat crown base of the 1935 design. This Kiosk has the Tudor Crown of George V and was produced before 1955, later versions had the crown of St.Edward, the crown that King Charles will wear today!
Unfortunately we no longer have the door attached but it is still with us! Most in-service K6s, including ours, had the glazing replaced with Perspex in the 1970s. The “currant red” colour was used so that the phone box was easy to spot, but disliked by many when they were first introduced. I wonder how many people have passed up and down, past Farm and taken a photo in our K6? ☎️
