39 years ago tonight a tragedy unfolded on the cruel seas off Cornwall:
“The greatest act of courage that I have ever seen, and am ever likely to see, was the penultimate courage and dedication shown by the Penlee [crew] when it manoeuvred back alongside the casualty in over 60 ft breakers and rescued four people shortly after the Penlee had been bashed on top of the casualty's hatch covers. They were truly the bravest eight men I've ever seen, who were also totally dedicated to upholding the highest standards of the RNLI.”

There is a Just Giving page for St Ives Salvation Army following last nights fire. They do great work helping those families and children in St Ives who need financial help and were planning on distributing food and gift parcels in the coming days for Christmas.

Such upsetting scenes in St Ives tonight - thankfully no one was hurt but people and businesses will be dreadfully affected at this important time of year.
Up to 12 fire crews attended from all over Cornwall after fire was reported at 6:30pm, finally extinguishing the flames at around 11pm.
Heartbreakingly the Salvation Army next door has apparently been gutted and will have lost hundreds of Christmas presents that were due to be given to children in St Ives and the Guildhall has opened its doors to people needing refuge along with businesses trying to save stock.
Our thoughts are with the people of St Ives tonight. It’s an incredible community and they will all pull together.
