This Mediterranean weather we are having really does make that outside space non-negotiable.

Long lunches that drift into evening. Wine on the terrace as the light softens. The kind of dining where the view does half the work.

Every family holiday has the same ambition — everyone together, nobody on top of each other — and finding a house that actually does it is another matter entirely. Sunrising, once Salcombe’s primary school, now does something altogether more indulgent with its six bedrooms and three floors: water views from nearly every window, two sheltered terraces — one for whoever wants peace and quiet, the other for whoever’s making the noise — and sleeps up to twelve without anyone feeling remotely on top of each other. All of it a short stroll from the harbour, so the car needn’t come out again until it’s time to leave — and this, to us, is the perfect place to gather the family for a week in Salcombe.

We’re finally able to share it from the outside in — the exterior shots have been a long time coming.

Somewhere between the crabbing, the beach cricket, and the ongoing ice cream negotiations, there is — if you time it right — a single hour that belongs entirely to you. Before the kids are up, the beach is empty, the water sits glass calm, and nobody currently requires anything of you whatsoever. Worth setting an alarm for.

There is a particular rhythm to a childhood summer in Salcombe — bacon tied to string off the harbour wall, an afternoon of beach cricket with rules nobody quite agrees on, water shallow and close enough that parents can watch from the shore with a book. A go at the helm, if they’re brave enough to ask. Whichever of Salcombe Dairy or Cranch’s wins the argument. And, running through all of it, rather more time spent outdoors and unsupervised than modern life generally allows. It is, we think, precisely what a childhood summer is meant to feel like.

Curls in the breeze, the boat bobbing its way along the estuary, salty air and sunshine on excited faces — the summer holidays are here.

Six weeks of freedom ahead, no schedule, no agenda, nothing but boat days, beach days and the summer stretching out in front of them.
