Ingenious little guys!

🦀 **Have you ever seen a crab wearing a sponge?**

Along the coasts of Cornwall, Devon and South Wales lives one of the UK’s most unusual crustaceans — the **Dromia personata**, also known as the sponge crab.

These charming crabs are easy to recognise by their velvety bodies and pink-tipped claws (often described as “pink toes”). But their most remarkable feature? They carry a piece of living sponge on their backs like a little camouflage cloak.

🧽 Using specially adapted back legs, the crab carefully trims the sponge to size and holds it in place. This clever disguise helps protect it from predators — and the sponge may even provide chemical defence.

🌙 Sponge crabs are mostly nocturnal and are usually found on rocky seabeds, which means divers are more likely to spot them than beach walkers. If you ever see what looks like a moving sponge underwater… take a closer look!

These used to be a more unusual record for our inshore fleet in South Devon, but they're becoming more frequent. This little critter, of course, went back alive.
