Prince’s Past Captain Graham Rigby and his friend Art Zammit from Avila Golf & Country Club thought it would be a wonderful idea to have a friendly game between the two clubs, following the format of the Ryder Cup. In 1998, a team from Prince’s travelled to Tampa, Florida for the inaugural match.
The match has been played every year since, except for interruptions due to 9/11 and the global pandemic. To celebrate the return of the match after COVID, it was renamed in honour of the founders as the Zammit‑Rigby Cup.
With the home team alternating each year, the winners have often been the host club, with only a few exceptions. While every player is trying their hardest to win, the real spirit of the sport always shines through, with camaraderie over the past 28 years creating many lasting friendships between the two clubs that only the playing of this match could have created.
When Avila return to Prince’s in two years’ time, we will celebrate 30 years of this great event.
