๐Ÿฐ AN EXCITING PIECE OF CASTLE BY THE SEAโ€™S HISTORY HAS BEEN FOUND! ๐Ÿฐ

After contacting North Yorkshire Archives, we have received a really positive reply โ€” and, excitingly, they have located several original historic building control records connected with our property and the neighbouring site at Mulgrave Place, formerly known as Charnel Garth.

One of the earliest records they found is:

๐Ÿ“œ RED 1123 โ€“ Detached House
6 February 1868
โ€œPlans of a detached house residence for Thomas Jarvis Esq. which he proposes to build.โ€

They also located:

๐Ÿ“œ RED 1151 โ€“ Stables
12 March 1868
Plans relating to the building of a lock-up shop, stable and coach house.

And later:

๐Ÿ“œ RED 3151 โ€“ Extensions and Alterations
18 August 1887

This is such an exciting breakthrough for us because it gives us genuine archive evidence relating to the development of the land around what became Castle By The Sea.

We have spent a long time trying to piece together the true story of the house, the surrounding buildings, Thomas Jarvis, neighbouring properties and the earlier history of Charnel Garth / Mulgrave Place.

Finding records dating back to 1868 takes us another step closer to understanding exactly what stood here, who built it, how the site developed and how Castle By The Sea fits into the wider Victorian history of Scarborough.

The next exciting step will be trying to view the surviving original plans themselves. If they still contain the drawings submitted with these applications, they could potentially show the footprint, layout, outbuildings and appearance of the site more than 150 years ago.

It really does feel like we are slowly bringing the forgotten story of this little corner of Scarborough back to life. โค๏ธ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŒŠ

What a spectacular sight in the night sky tonight! ๐ŸŒ™โœจ

Weโ€™ve been lucky enough to watch the total lunar eclipse from our own view, with the Moon taking on that beautiful deep red glow as it passes through Earthโ€™s shadow. ๐ŸŒŒโค๏ธ

Here are some pictures from our view tonight โ€” we hope you enjoy them as much as we did capturing them! ๐Ÿ“ธ๐ŸŒ•

Did you manage to see the eclipse where you are? Feel free to share your photos with us in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡

A Look Back at the History of Castle By The Sea, Scarborough ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŒŠ

As we continue our own chapter at Castle By The Sea, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate some of the people who have played a part in the remarkable story of this very special property.

During the 1980s and 1990s, Mr and Mrs Hunter undertook an incredible transformation of Castle By The Sea. What had been a dilapidated five-bedroom, two-bathroom bungalow was transformed into a thriving ten-bedroom en-suite hotel, complete with a bar, restaurant and tea rooms.

We are extremely grateful to Hannah and Hayley, who have kindly shared their family photographs with us from this period. These wonderful images provide a fascinating glimpse into Castle By The Sea as it once was and, more importantly, preserve the hard work and dedication of the people who helped shape its history.

The story of Castle By The Sea stretches back much further.

Dating from 1876, the property has a fascinating connection with celebrated Victorian artist John Atkinson Grimshaw, who lived and worked in Scarborough during an important period of his artistic career. Nearby stood The Towers, built in 1866 and associated with Mr Jarvis, a retired brewer from Rotherham who became a patron of Grimshaw and supported his artistic career.

Since those Victorian beginnings, Castle By The Sea has witnessed almost 150 years of change. Families have come and gone, the building has evolved, and each generation has left its own mark upon it.

Remarkably, the property has changed hands 26 times, with Dean and myself now having the privilege of becoming its 26th owners.

We see ourselves not simply as owners, but as custodians of another chapter in the history of Castle By The Sea. We have an exciting challenge ahead of us, and our ambition is to respect its heritage while ensuring that the work we undertake today leaves a lasting legacy for those who will care for it in the future.

Looking through these photographs is a wonderful reminder that the work we are doing today will one day become part of the buildingโ€™s history too.

To everyone who has contributed to the story of Castle By The Sea over the generations โ€” thank you.

Hereโ€™s to preserving its past, caring for its present and creating its next chapter. ๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŒŠ

Wishing everyone a wonderful Sunday from Castle By The Sea, Scarborough. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป

After some immense searching and persistence, I found some Ariel shorts from 1947 after WW2 of the house going upto 1950 I believe. Iโ€™m on a mission to find as much history I can to create a small magazine type history book from the start 1876 to the current day 2026.

A small map shows our site called charnel chapel/ Garth this was once a mediviel grave yard/ chapel to assist St Maryโ€™s churchโ›ช๏ธ

Follow along for my hunt of history ๐Ÿ™ˆ

I hope our guests and followers enjoy history as we do ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ’™

A happy and enthusiastic start to our week we hope the same for youโ€™re selves ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป
