🧵 WILD HISTORY - HARRIS TWEED®: CROFT TO CATWALK
Before Harris Tweed® ever appeared on fashion runways, it was woven for survival. Crofters spun and wove wool because Atlantic weather can be harsh, and a good thick cloth was as essential as a sturdy roof and a good peat fire.
Everything changed in the mid‑1800s when Lady Dunmore spotted the quality of the cloth woven in Harris and Lewis - tough, warm, beautiful, and coloured by the land itself. She championed it far beyond the islands, and suddenly this humble croft cloth was being admired in high places.
By 1910, demand was booming, and so were the imitations. Islanders protected their craft the only way islanders know how: with skill, stubborn pride, and a legal trademark. The Harris Tweed® Orb was created, guaranteeing that every metre is still handwoven at home, by islanders, using pure wool, finished right here in the Outer Hebrides.
Today, you can see Harris Tweed® around the islands and far beyond - from jackets and bags in local shops across the islands to bold new collaborations with designers around the world (Nike is one example).
Explore the weavers’ sheds dotted through the villages where the real magic happens on the Harris Tweed Trail website.
And the story keeps growing. Each season brings new tweeds, fresh colours, and patterns inspired by the land, the weather, and the creativity of the island’s weavers. From croft to catwalk, Harris Tweed® continues to evolve without ever losing its Hebridean heart.
