A little black magic from Bryn’s kitchen! 🖤

Charcoal pasta, beautiful Shetland scallops and a rather striking combination of colours and flavours.

Who said autumn had to be dull? 😉

Think pink! 🩷

Our kitchen garden here in the Scottish Borders, just 10 steps from the kitchen(!) is still producing wonderful vegetables in the middle of October!

And Bryn’s latest seasonal creation? Heritage beetroot ravioli with Elrick Log goat’s cheese and beetroot sauce.

We grow beetroot in all sorts of beautiful colours, but somehow pink always wins! 😂🩷

Maximum flavour. Minimum fuss™️

🌸 Sweet peas in the middle of October? We can hardly believe it! 💜

Our kitchen garden sweet peas (and other flowers!) are still flowering, with new buds appearing every day! They’re looking a little tired now, but after such a wonderful season, who can blame them?

We love our naturally grown flowers, with no pesticides or chemicals. They don’t last forever, and that’s part of their charm.

So this weekend at THE GORDON ARMS Restaurant with Rooms, we’re celebrating what might be their final flourish! Sweet peas everywhere — in the restaurant, bar, bedrooms and even the gents’ loos! 🌸

One gentleman once thanked us for putting fresh flowers in there: “We men appreciate beautiful things too, you know!” 😂 And quite right!

Fancy coming to admire them before they disappear?

🌸 Tonight and Saturday — a couple of restaurant tables available.

🛏️ Saturday — just two rooms remaining.

🍽️ Sunday lunch — Bryn’s roast beef is on the menu!

Come for the food, stay for the flowers. We can’t promise the sweet peas will last another week! 💜

**UPDATE!!!**🥇🥇🥇🥇

Oh my goodness — FOUR GOLDS!!! 🤩
We’ve just received the news that my Blackcurrant Varenye has also won GOLD, in the Homegrown or Foraged category!

So what started as three Golds has suddenly become FOUR! I genuinely cannot quite believe it. ❤️

What an incredible early birthday present! 🎁 🥂
______

WOW. What a birthday present — and my birthday isn’t even until tomorrow! 🥹🥂🥇🥇🥇💃🏆💐

I still can’t quite believe this…🙃

I entered four jars of my homemade varenye into the World Jam Festival — and came home a TRIPLE GOLD WINNER! 🥇🥇🥇

🍓 Strawberry — GOLD
💛 Yellow Plum — GOLD
💚 Gooseberry — GOLD

And my Blackcurrant Varenye is a FINALIST in the Homegrown or Foraged category! 🖤

For years, friends and guests have told me: “Oxana, you have to enter these into a competition!” I never did. Then our wonderfully talented and multi-award winner neighbour Ena (Ena Mitchell) told me about the World Jam Festival… and finally, four years later, I thought: why not?!

It was all ridiculously last-minute. We found the jars, quickly made the labels, discovered that four jars fitted perfectly into an old wooden Port box 😂 — and drove 3½ hours to Newby Hall (Newby Hall & Gardens ) with them. 😂

Varenye is something very close to my heart: whole fruit, very little sugar, cooked for just five minutes — no pectin, no lemon, nothing else. A family recipe and tradition going back more than 100 years.

And the funniest part? This was the first year I had EVER made gooseberry varenye. We had beautiful gooseberries from our kitchen garden and simply followed my instinct. And it won GOLD. 🥹

All three Golds received 30/30 — 10/10 for taste, 10/10 for set and 10/10 for presentation.

I’m absolutely over the moon. 🤗🙃

Thank you to everyone who kept telling me to do this. Thank you to the judges. And thank you to our little kitchen garden. ❤️

What an unbelievable birthday present. 🥇🥇🥇

FROM OUR APPLE TREE TO YOUR SUNDAY LUNCH 🍏

Some apples are made for eating straight from the tree.

Ours most definitely are not. 😂

They’re wonderfully sharp — but cook them down and they make the most beautiful apple sauce. And tomorrow, that’s exactly where they’re going.

Sunday Lunch tomorrow:
Rare-breed Oxford Sandy and Black roast pork, proper roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, rich gravy, plenty of crackling — and our own apple sauce, made from apples picked from the tree just outside.

It doesn’t get much more local than that. 🍎

Come hungry.

We’d love to introduce and wholeheartedly recommend Steve Auty — a local Yarrow Valley man and one of those increasingly rare people whose number you’re very pleased to have in your phone. 😊

Steve is a brilliant general handyman who can help with all sorts of jobs around the house — plumbing and electrical work, fitting showers, installing and repairing washing machines, dishwashers and tumble dryers, general household repairs and maintenance, appliances, and even some vehicle repairs.

But most importantly, he is reliable, thoughtful, incredibly tidy and meticulous. A genuinely lovely, modest man who takes real pride in doing things properly.

And perhaps the best recommendation we can give: if Steve says he can do it, he can. If he can’t, he’ll tell you. No nonsense, no pretending.

We trust him completely and couldn’t recommend him more highly.

So, if you have one of those jobs that needs someone capable, practical and trustworthy, give Steve a call:

Our honey plums 💛

Another little crop from our kitchen garden, but this one is very special to us.

Growing up, our family had a yellow plum tree, planted by our Papa. Its plums were incredibly soft, juicy and sweet — we called them “honey plums”.

Our tree here in Yarrow gives us almost exactly the same fruit. We eat them straight from the tree, and Oxana makes varenye with them.

But more than anything, they taste of childhood, home and the people we loved.

They may no longer be here with us, but somehow, when these little golden plums appear each year, it feels as though our family is sending us a little hello. 💛

Some journeys are part of the destination. 🍂

The road home to THE GORDON ARMS, through the Yarrow Valley from Selkirk.

Quiet roads, autumn colours 🍁, fires lit, five rooms upstairs — and Bryn in the kitchen.

If you’ve been thinking about an autumn escape to the Scottish Borders, this might be your sign.

A rather exceptional German Pinot Noir. 🍷👏

2022 Spätburgunder Vom Kalkstein — 100% Pinot Noir from sixth-generation family w**emakers Weingut am Schlipf Schneider.

Vom Kalkstein means “from the limestone”. Hand-picked grapes, wild fermentation, around 18 months in large oak and bottled unfiltered.

Elegant, silky, beautifully fresh — and exceptional value for a w**e of this quality.

New on the w**e list at THE GORDON ARMS Restaurant with Rooms. By the bottle.

And with Sunday roast? Absolutely. 🔥🍷

Germany makes seriously good Pinot Noir. This is a very fine example.
