Well, that didn’t last long…

12 grouse arrived last Thursday.
By the end of the weekend, every single one had gone.

And judging by the compliments coming back to the kitchen, we’d better order rather more this week.

Last weekend’s grouse was served with duck-fat roast potatoes, Savoy cabbage, our homemade redcurrant jelly & red wine jus. This week, Cavolo Nero takes the place of the Savoy.

More grouse are coming this week.

Unfortunately, we are closed this Sunday (6th September) due to the Tour O the Borders race road closures.

From the middle of September, a few new wines will be joining our wine list — including this beautiful Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico by Ottavio Piersanti.

Classic Italian, elegant and incredibly moreish.

Available by the glass or by the bottle.

And don’t forget — new season grouse will be on our menu from Thursday, 27 August.

September is already looking rather busy, so if you see a table, a room — or both — available, book it while it’s there.

BEYOND BORDERS INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL — THIS WEEKEND AT TRAQUAIR HOUSE

If you’ve never been, this is one of the Scottish Borders’ great little secrets.

For just two days, beautiful historic Traquair House becomes a meeting place for writers, journalists, politicians, artists, musicians and some seriously interesting minds — talking about books, culture, politics, history and the world we live in.

After two very busy weeks, and with another one ahead, we decided to escape for a day and a half. ❤️

One rule: no work. No emails, no checking bookings, no calls. A proper little work detox — something we’re not particularly good at. 😂

So, Harrogate it was — only about three hours from the Yarrow Valley, and absolutely worth it.

What a beautiful town: an elegant Victorian spa resort, green, restrained and rather grand. Just wandering the streets and looking at the architecture is a pleasure.

And, of course… breakfast at Bettys Café Tea Rooms. 😊

But the real revelation was Newby Hall — genuinely one of the most impressive historic houses we’ve visited in Britain. Incredible Robert Adam interiors, original Thomas Chippendale furniture, wonderful proportions, colours and taste.

The one-hour guided tour was exceptional — our two guides brought the house to life with fascinating stories and wonderful knowledge.

No photography is allowed inside… perhaps that’s a good thing. We can’t show you everything — you’ll have to discover it for yourself. ❤️

A very short trip, a complete break from work — and exactly what we needed.

A little more beauty at THE GORDON ARMS Restaurant with Rooms … 🎨

We are delighted to be exhibiting a collection of paintings by Scottish artist Anne Skinner (Anne Skinner Art ), whose wonderful work is inspired by the Scottish coastline, its changing light, colours and landscapes.

One of our guests looked at them and said something that describes them perfectly: “They simply make your heart and soul happy.” ❤️

And they really do.

Anne’s paintings are now hanging throughout our upstairs — and they are available to buy. If you are dining or staying with us and would like to see more of the collection, just ask Oxana.

Perhaps one of them might even go home with you. 😊

Two little jars of ruby. ❤️

After a rather busy week, the redcurrants finally made it into the pan on Sunday evening. By Monday evening, the jelly was ready.

800g of redcurrants. Two tiny jars. That’s it.

But what jars they are — a beautiful clear ruby colour, an incredible flavour and that wonderful, delicate set that makes redcurrant jelly so special.

Which means it is now a rather precious commodity at THE GORDON ARMS Restaurant with Rooms. Or, to put it another way: strictly rationed. 😂

It will be saved for one thing only — grouse.

Those who have tried Bryn’s grouse before will know why it’s worth sacrificing a jar or two. (One of our guests once declared Bryn “the best game chef in the country”. We’re far too modest to say such a thing ourselves, of course. 😂)

And, all being well, the first grouse of the season will be on the menu from Thursday 27th August.

From our kitchen garden to the jar — and eventually, to the plate. ❤️
