“Redstart” sessions are for preschool children aged 2.5 – 4 years old. This is a guide in relation to the nature of the activities, the resources used and the walk and play in the woodlands. Classes will also run during the school holidays for primary school aged children. These will also be on Mondays and Fridays at the same venue.
“Yellowhammer” sessions are for younger children aged 5-7 years old.
“Greenfinch” sessions are for older children aged 8-12 years old. There will be some classes for mixed age groups and some longer ‘workshops’ for craft projects that are more time consuming. What does a typical 90 minute session look like? "Adventure / Art / Activities!"
The “Redstart” preschool sessions are structured around a story book and/or theme which will guide a fun art and craft activity in the barn with lots of different resources to use and explore. We will have a little snack break in our lovely seated craft barn before embarking on our outdoor adventure and discovery walk to the woods. Here we will play games, build and explore, treasure hunt, have little tasks to complete and objects to find and observe. Some days we will extend our crafting fun in this green space, with mark making and the use of natural resources found in the woods. We might even create a collective piece before closing our session with sound making, parachute games, sensory story time and singing. This will occur in all weathers so please dress accordingly! The “Yellowhammer” young children sessions (KS1 age) are similar in theme and structure to the “Redstart” sessions but up levelled to their development. There will be much more opportunity to practice fine motor skills and independence in their use of art and craft materials. Exploration into the woods and discovering objects / finding clues will be more advanced, with opportunities for leaning woodland terminology. Games will have a more complex and playful nature and they will be more involved in bringing storytelling to life with percussion, mask, costume, props, sound effects and characterisation. The “Greenfinch” older children / tweens sessions (KS2 age) are 60 minutes and 90 minutes and will be more focused around arts and crafts, although the outdoor spaces will still be incorporated into some of the sessions. Themes might centre around popular fictional non picture books, such as Harry Potter or Tom Gates, or non-fiction books such as books centred around geography, science and mythology. Film and TV genres or even video games might be used as a central theme, as well as nature and wildlife and the style and works of famous artists will be explored in learning new skills and techniques. Art genres, mediums and styles such as Popart, collage, abstract, expressionism and surrealism. Craft making might be more advanced such as making a bird feeder, bug hotel, clay products or magic wands.
