The Old Stables Bed & Breakfast

The Old Stables Bed & Breakfast A beautiful rural retreat in the Somerset countryside. The Old Stables is a lovingly restored 17th century, Grade II Listed barn of outstanding character.

Nestled in the hamlet of Chelynch, in the beautiful Somerset countryside, a warm and friendly welcome awaits you. We are ideally located on the edge of the Mendip Hills (an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) with easy access to the many delights that Somerset has to offer. Whether you want to revisit history in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bath, hike in the magnificent Cheddar Gorge, attend

an event at the Bath and West Showground or just enjoy a day walking in the beautiful surrounding countryside, Somerset has something for everyone! Our 3 en-suite rooms, Wells, Shepton and Doulting, have been thoughtfully decorated and furnished with our guests in mind. Comfy beds with quality linens, locally made pine furniture, antique finds and all those luxurious little extras that you deserve. Home baked cakes or biscuits await you in your room. Fresh milk for your selection of teas and coffee can be found in the silent mini fridge together with bottled water. There’s adequate space in your fridge as well for any of the abundance of locally sourced goodies that you might pick up from one of the local Farmers’ markets that can be found all over the county. Our bountiful, traditional farmhouse breakfast, using locally sourced produce whenever possible, is served in our very special 17th century beamed dining room. Take your time and enjoy – there’s no rush. We look forward to welcoming you to The Old Stables very soon. Alyson and Simon

The Somerset Rural Life Museum really is a bit of a gem. One of our favourite museums and definitely worth a visit when you stay with us. Check out their page to see what events are on while you're in Somerset with us.

⭐ Legacy in Making: Celebrating the past, present and future of the Somerset Craft Guild

We're delighted to share Legacy in Making, a new exhibition celebrating nearly a century of craft in Somerset, and the incredible makers carrying it forward.

Presented in partnership with South West Heritage Trust, the exhibition brings together former members and masters of the Somerset Craft Guild alongside our 2025 Emerging Maker Bursary artists. Across glass, textiles, wood, metal, ceramics and more, the work reflects deep connections to place, heritage and experimentation - with many makers embracing sustainable materials and processes.

Founded in 1933, the Somerset Craft Guild has supported craftspeople across the county for almost 100 years. This exhibition marks an important moment in that story, as its legacy continues through new opportunities, bursaries and collaborations with Somerset Art Works.
