With the tax changes from the Autumn Budget coming into effect imminently, 70% of hospitality operators are planning to cut jobs. The survey run by a collection of UK hospitality trade bodies, including the British Institute of Innkeeping: Scotland and UKHospitality, also found:

• 29% plan to reduce their trading hours.
• 60% will cancel planned investment.
• 25% say they have no cash reserves left.

Microhotels are becoming an interesting prospect for hoteliers looking to reduce operational costs. With smaller rooms and a pared-down offering marketed at a slightly lower price, this model makes sense for both hoteliers and consumers.

But what’s the formula for a successful micro-hotel?
• Clever design. Small doesn’t mean simple – successful micro hotels have smart beds that can be both a sofa and a bed, vertical storage and pleasing aesthetics.
• Great technology. Self-service stations for check-in and requesting extra services, plus apps for all room controls, are crucial for both guest experience and operational efficiencies.
• Good location. Removing F&B and other services from the hotel offering means guests need to be able to access amenities nearby.
