A letter from 1926. Just a few lines describing a boy named Harold Hatfield.

Not brilliant. Not remarkable. Just steady. Nervous. Trying his best.

Nearly a century later, this fragile piece of ephemera is all that’s left to tell us he was here.

Part of my growing Ephemera Collection, where forgotten papers, letters, photographs, and documents reveal the stories of ordinary people time almost erased.

A terrified mob chased a strange figure through the streets of Lincoln. Cornered at Newport Arch, he leapt onto the ancient Roman gateway itself. One man fired a gun. The bullet hit… and did absolutely nothing.

Who, or what, was Spring-Heeled Jack?

📁 CASE FILE: THE NEWPORT ARCH ENCOUNTER

📍 LOCATION

Newport Arch stands in the heart of Lincoln, a surviving Roman gateway that has watched over the city for nearly 2,000 years. By night, its shadowed stonework creates an eerie passage between the old and modern city.

👤 ENTITY

• Human-like figure with extraordinary agility
• Said to make impossible leaps and jumps
• Reportedly immune to injury
• Vanished before witnesses could capture him

🕯️ INCIDENT

Around October 1877, reports emerged that the mysterious figure known as Spring-Heeled Jack had been spotted in Lincoln. According to local accounts, a crowd pursued him through the streets, determined to catch the elusive intruder.

The chase led to Newport Arch, where witnesses claimed Jack performed an astonishing feat. Rather than being trapped, he reportedly sprang onto the top of the ancient structure itself.

As the crowd gathered below, one pursuer allegedly fired a shot directly at him.

⚠️ THE STRANGE PART

Witnesses claimed the bullet struck Spring-Heeled Jack but had no visible effect whatsoever.

Instead of falling or showing injury, he simply disappeared into the darkness moments later, leaving the crowd stunned and without an explanation.

🧠 WHAT COULD IT BE?

• An exaggerated Victorian urban legend
• A highly athletic prankster exploiting local fears
• A case of mass witness misidentification
• An unknown phenomenon linked to the wider Spring-Heeled Jack mystery

📜 FINAL NOTE

Many towns claimed to have encountered Spring-Heeled Jack.

Few stories involve a bullet that supposedly did nothing at all.
